This study aims to examine the calligraphic characteristics and underlying aesthetic philosophy of Dongnong Kim Ga-jin(1846–1922), an Enlightenment intellectual who served as a high-ranking official during the Korean Empire and dedicated himself to the anti-Japanese independence movement following the Annexation of Korea by Japan, focusing on his surviving calligraphy. Kim Ga-jin’s calligraphy is closely linked to the turbulent times he faced. His life of "reclusive retreat" practiced after the Eulsa Treaty led to artistic activities involving poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting; the surviving calligraphy left behind from this process reflects the independent will of an intellectual seeking to overcome national crises. His calligraphic aesthetics exhibit a blend of Confucian values rooted in the family scholarship of the Andong Kim clan and Taoist elegance. The inscription on Baegundongcheon in Inwangsan Mountain and the life at the detached villa Baegunjang demonstrate a pursuit of a life of "immortal realms not far from humans," maintaining integrity within the confines of daily life rather than an external retreat detached from reality. Furthermore, the seal "Jong-o So-ho," frequently used in his calligraphy after 1916, symbolizes a state of Confucian reclusion that rejects the vested interests of colonial power and seeks to practice "preserving the principles of heaven and discarding human desires." In conclusion, Kim Ga-jin's calligraphy is an artistic masterpiece combining Confucian loyalty based on unwavering devotion to the world with a Taoist aesthetic consciousness that returns to nature. This holds great academic significance as it goes beyond a simple calligraphy work and serves as an important indicator for elucidating the complex inner world and zeitgeist faced by intellectuals during the transition to modernity.
