This study reviewed twelve empirical studies on Catholic priest burnout published between 2022 and 2025 to identify recent research trends. Two structural limitations persisted: study populations concentrated in Western countries, and cross-sectional surveys continued to dominate methodological approaches. At the same time, studies focusing on protective factors have grown in number, reflecting a thematic expansion toward multidimensional resources examined through a positive psychology lens. Researchers in Kenya and Nigeria independently studied priests in their own national contexts, departing from the theoretical frameworks of established Western research groups. This development signals that the knowledge-production structure, long concentrated within a narrow circle of scholars, is beginning to diversify. These findings point to two methodological needs: qualitative inquiry must precede any proper understanding of pastoral contexts in non-Western settings, and the uncritical translation of Western measurement instruments risks structurally distorting the burnout experiences of priests in those contexts. Future studies should move beyond individual psychological characteristics to examine broader contexts, including diocesan organizational support systems and comparative research across Asian countries. In particular, the priestly formation and continuing education required for increasingly multicultural pastoral environment remains a gap left unaddressed by existing research.

본 연구는 2022년부터 2025년까지 발표된 가톨릭 사제 소진 관련 실증 연구 12편을 검토해 최근 연구 동향을 파악했다. 검토 결과, 연구 대상 지역이 여전히 서구권에 집중되어 있고 방법론 역시 횡단적 설문조사에 편중되는 구조적 한계가 지속되고 있었다. 보호 요인에 주목하는 연구들이 늘어나면서 긍정 심리학 관점에서 다차원적 자원을 탐색하려는 주제적 확장도 함께 나타났다. 케냐와 나이지리아 연구자들이 서구권 연구그룹의 이론 틀을 따르지 않고 자국 사제들을 대상으로 독립적인연구를 수행했다는 점도 주목된다. 그동안 특정 연구자 집단에 집중되어 있던 지식생산 구조가 부분적으로나마 다원화되기 시작했음을 나타낸다. 이러한 분석을 바탕으로 본 연구는 비서구권 사목 현장을 온전히 이해하려면 질적 연구가 선행되어야 하며, 서구에서 개발된 측정 도구를 단순히 번역해 사용하는 방식으로는 사제들이 실제 경험하는 소진을 구조적으로 왜곡할 위험이 크다고 지적했다. 향후 연구는사제 개인의 심리적 특성에만 초점을 맞추는 시각에서 벗어나, 교구 조직의 지원체계와 아시아 국가 간 비교 연구로 시야를 넓혀야 한다. 특히 다문화 사목 환경이요구하는 사제의 역량을 양성과 계속교육의 과제로 다루는 일은 지금까지의 연구가 비워 둔 자리로 남아 있다.
