We explored the settlement factors of 30 international students from Vietnam and Kyrgyzstan residing in Gwangju. We conducted surveys and in-depth interviews, and performed thematic analysis to examine their settlement experiences from multiple dimensions. As a result, we found that work experiences strengthened settlement intentions when accompanied by respect and hospitality, but illegal part-time jobs and repetitive labor intensified instability. We also identified that language proficiency functioned as a crucial resource enabling academic performance, institutional participation, and social interaction, while simultaneously generating hierarchy and dependency within ethnic communities. We confirmed that institutional barriers such as visa issuance, financial proof requirements, and employment restrictions exacerbated settlement insecurity, whereas participation in community activities fostered solidarity and belonging beyond nationality, thereby reinforcing long-term settlement motivation. Through these findings, we demonstrated that settlement is not determined by a single factor but is shaped by the interaction of individual, institutional, and communal elements. We contend that this study provides empirical evidence for developing support policies at the university, community, and governmental levels, and contributes academically by extending the discourse on international student settlement from a metropolitan focus to a region-based perspective.

우리는 광주지역에 거주하는 베트남과 키르기스스탄 출신 외국인 유학생 30명을 대상으로 안정적 정착 요인을 탐색하였다. 설문조사와 심층 인터뷰를 실시하고 주제분석을 통해 유학생의 정주 경험을 다층적으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 우리는 근로 경험이 존중과 환대 속에서는 정주 의지를 강화하지만, 불법 아르바이트와 반복 노동은 불안정을 심화시킴을 확인하였다. 또한 언어 능력이 학업과 제도적 참여, 사회적 교류를 가능케 하는 핵심 자원이면서도 커뮤니티 내부의 위계와 의존을 낳는 이중적 성격을 지님을 밝혀냈다. 우리는 비자 발급, 잔고 증빙, 취업 제한 등 제도적 장벽이 정주 불안정을 가중시키는 구조적 요인임을 확인하였으며, 공동체 활동 참여가 국적을 초월한 연대와 소속감을 형성하여 장기적 정주 동기를 강화함을 확인하였다. 우리는 이러한 분석을 통해 유학생 정주가 단일 차원이 아니라 개인·제도·공동체 요인이 상호작용하는 복합적 과정임을 제시하였다. 우리는 본 연구가 지역 대학 유학생 정책수립을 위한 실증적 근거를 제공하고, 외국인 유학생 정주 연구를 수도권 중심에서 벗어나 지역 기반으로 확장했다는 점에서 학문적 기여를 가진다고 본다.
