This study focuses on examining the characteristics and significance of The Secret Recipe of Simcheong-gil by Theatre Company Masil as a work of applied theatre. To analyze this piece, the study first reviews domestic trends in applied theatre and identifies the position of Masil’s work within the characteristics revealed through prior research in Korea. Notably, there is a strong tendency for applied theatre to develop either from educational theatre or from community theatre, and these influences are clearly reflected in the history of Theatre Company Masil as well. The strengths of applied theatre, which have been developed through diverse pathways such as children and youth theatre, theatre for early childhood, educational theatre, and community theatre, are embedded in The Secret Recipe of Simcheong-gil. Because Masil’s work can be unified under the keyword of participation, various performance activities are connected within a single context. Although this study focuses on a single work, it is understood that the methodology developed through Masil’s extensive body of previous productions is applied within it. This is particularly evident in the intersections of gender, age, and locality embodied by elderly women, as well as in the collaborative process with citizen actors. It was possible in the process of discovering and sharing the voices of elderly women in the Gokseong region, which are often absent. The historicity of marginalized individuals, the invocation and reconstruction of memory, and mobility function as key concepts for aesthetic practice. In particular, mobility holds significant meaning as an aesthetic practice.

이 연구는 극단 마실의 <심청길 비밀 레시피>가 지닌 어플라이드 시어터로서의 성격과 의미를 살피는데 중점을 두었다. 이 작품을 고찰하기 위해 어플라이드 시어터의 국내 동향을 살펴보고 연구사를 통해 드러난 국내 어플라이드 시어터의 특징들 안에서 극단 마실의 작업이 위치한 지점을 파악하고자 했다. 어플라이드 시어터는 교육연극에서 확장된 것과 커뮤니티 연극에서 발전한 것이 두드러진 경향인데 극단 마실의 역사 안에서도 이러한 작업들의 영향 관계가 뚜렷하다. 아동청소년극, 영유아극, 교육연극, 커뮤니티 연극 등 다양한 작업 경로를 통해 도달한 어플라이드 시어터가 지닌 강점이 <심청길 비밀 레시피>에 녹아 있다. 극단 마실의 작업이 참여성이라는 키워드로 모일 수 있었기 때문에 다양한 공연 활동들이 하나의 맥락으로 연결될 수 있었다. 이 연구의 대상 <심청길 비밀 레시피> 한 작품 안에는 많은 작품을 생산했던 극단 마실의 여러 방법론이 적용되어 있다. 할머니들이 지닌 여성, 노인, 지역이라는 특성이 교차하면서 맞물리는 지점, 그리고 시민 배우들과 협업하는 과정에서의 유연한 횡단이 그것이다. 이는 부재하기 쉬운 곡성 지역의 노인 여성의 목소리를 찾고 그것을 나누는 실천 안에서 가능했다. 소외된 이들의 역사성, 기억의 소환과 재구성의 방식, 이동성은 미학적 실천을 위한 키워드에 해당한다. 특히 이동성은 미학적 실천으로서의 의미를 지닌다.
