This study demonstrates how the aesthetics of betweenness (間), inherent in the act of ceramic creation, expands beyond an individual's internal practice to encompass social relationships. ‘Betweenness’ signifies a relational field wherein resonance and creation emerge in the space between the creator and the medium, or between the self and others. This paper establishes Zhuangzi's philosophy of Xiaoyaoyou (逍遙遊, Free and Easy Wandering) as the theoretical foundation for an individual's creative practice, characterized by deep immersion in the process. It then investigates how this practice is deepened through encounters with a community.
Adopting a practice-based research methodology, this study analyzes the researcher's own creative practice through four distinct stages: Mulsang (the state of material), Hyeonsang (the state of phenomenon), Dongsang (the state of movement), and Simsang (the state of mind). While the initial stages explore ‘Betweenness’ as a form of individual, ascetic practice, the fourth stage—which is the in-depth focus of this paper—examines a community art project in Yanggu, Gangwon Province. This case study illustrates the process by which ‘Betweenness’ evolves into a concrete, intersubjective space through interaction with local residents.
The significance of this research lies in its proposition that ceramic creation can function as a form of socially engaged practice, transcending individual philosophical performance to forge communal relationships.
