This study investigates how ceramics can illuminate relations between human and nonhuman beings by focusing on interactions between clay and the body. It first examines new materialist theories of Bruno Latour, Jane Bennett, and Karen Barad to discuss the autonomy and agency of nonhuman matter, then shifts toward a “new anthropocentrism” in response to the paradox that radical post?anthropocentrism risks undermining human practical agency. This theoretical turn is applied to the relation between artist and material through an analysis of Lee Kun-Yong’s work, and is further developed via Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s concepts of flesh ontology and bodily phenomenology, which frame the mutual entanglement of clay and body as the “flesh of the world.” The study also examines Alexandra Engelfriet’s clay performances to show that the very act of relating to clay can be read as articulating narratives of coexistence. Building on these discussions, the practice-based component stages full-bodied contact with clay to materialize shared narratives drawn by human and nonhuman together, thereby proposing ceramics as a non-separable ecological practice that observes and questions the interactions between nature and society.

본 연구는 도자예술에서 흙과 신체의 상호작용을 통해 인간과 비인간 존재가 맺는 관계를 고찰하는 조형 연구이다. 연구의 초기 단계에서는 브뤼노 라투르(Bruno Latour), 제인 베넷(Jane Bennett), 카렌 바라드(Karen Barad)의 신유물론을 검토하여 비인간 물질의 자율성과 행위성을 논의하지만, 탈인간중심주의가 인간의 실천 능력을 약화시키는 모순과 한계를 인식하고 신인간중심주의로 이론적 탐구의 방향을 전환한다. 이러한 개념적 사유를 예술가와 재료의 관계에 적용하여 이해하고자 이건용(Lee Kun-Yong)의 작업을 분석한다. 이어서, 연구자는 신인간중심적 태도로 구축한 새로운 조형언어를 모리스 메를로-퐁티(Maurice Merleau-Ponty)의 철학을 통해 심화적으로 탐구하며, 살(Flesh)의 존재론과 신체 현상학을 통해 흙과 몸의 상호침투적 얽힘을 ‘세계의 살’로 사유한다. 또한 알렉산드라 엥겔프리트(Alexandra Engelfriet)의 작품 분석을 통해 흙과 맺는 관계 자체가 공존의 서사에 관한 발화임을 확인한다. 위의 내용을 바탕으로 본격적인 작품 연구에서 연구자는 흙과의 전신체적 접촉행위를 통해 인간과 비인간이 맺는 관계의 서사를 형상화한다. 이러한 연구는 생태계로부터 분리되지 않은 채, 자연과 사회의 상호작용을 관찰하고 질문하는 언어로서 도자예술의 가능성을 제시함에 의의가 있다.
