Even if the purpose of clay-based creative activities is the realization of functionality or expression, the completion of formal expression in ceramic art is mostly finalized through the firing (燒成) process. By examining the fired results, one can infer the forming and shaping processes or distinguish between creative techniques such as glaze, engobe, stain, and unglazed firing used in the artistic process. In ceramic art, firing can be considered the final and essential stage for achieving solid materialization and serving as a key expressive process.
As contemporary ceramic art evolves in a creative environment where the boundaries between material and immaterial elements are increasingly ambiguous, relying solely on sintered and hardened materials is no longer the sole approach. Recently, changes have also emerged in the ownership system of artworks through the application of blockchain technology. This paper examines the emergence of unfired ceramics, which became a solidified trend beyond the experimental phase of the 1970s and gained prominence after the 1980s due to the trend of dematerialization. Through case studies, the impacts on expression were classified into three perspectives.
First, unfired ceramics as a visual mechanism for recording changes in energy and the passage of time. Second, the reflection of religious philosophy, including Buddhism and Taoism, through the expression of absence and emptiness. Third, the omission of the firing process, which hardens and materializes clay, as an approach to regeneration and environmental considerations. By categorizing cases of unfired ceramics in contemporary ceramic works from both East and West, this study analyzes the creative process and outcomes of unfired ceramics. Furthermore, it explores the transformation of ownership, the expansion of ceramic expression, and future possibilities as the creative environment continues to evolve.
