In contemporary ceramics, experimental forms achieved through the fusion and hybridization of diverse materials have emerged as a central discourse. In this context, urushi (lacquer), traditionally used in the Kintsugi (金継ぎ) technique for ceramic repair, requires reevaluation not merely as an adhesive but as a medium that possesses both formative and mediating potential. However, contemporary discourse on Kintsugi has often been centered around the symbolic concepts of "healing and restoration," while in practice, the emphasis tends to fall more heavily on the visual consumption of gold ornamentation. This trend, irrespective of the temporal and aesthetic value of modern ceramic Kintsugi, obscures the material properties and artistic potential of urushi, fixing interpretation narrowly around its visual symbolism.
This study analyzes the affective consumption structure of contemporary Kintsugi discourse and explores the potential of urushi both as an independent formative medium and as a mediator connecting heterogeneous materials. The gloss, depth, and physical qualities of urushi are examined to identify its aesthetic possibilities and capacity to bond disparate substances. This approach establishes a foundation for repositioning urushi not as a subsidiary tool for restoration, but as a central medium for creative expression in contemporary ceramic practice.
Additionally, the study introduces imaginative, speculative applications through virtual hybrid media images and sculptural prototypes, suggesting potential pathways for urushi to expand as an artistic medium. This strategy, which bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities, indicates that urushi can acquire new meanings within the formal language of modern ceramics when approached as both a hybrid and mediating medium.
Ultimately, this research aims to redefine the role of urushi as a material encompassing tradition and modernity, functionality and form, restoration and creation—thereby contributing to a broader understanding of its aesthetic value and inter-material connectivity within the scope of contemporary artistic practice.
