This study seeks to embrace Merleau-Ponty's ontology and the interconnectedness of the world, attempting to unfold a new perspective on the artistic realm through their own body. The study begins by establishing a theoretical foundation on how ceramic artworks embody bodily reasoning, recognizing the necessity to comprehend the complex relationality between the body and clay. Grounded in Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological understanding and research on 'flesh' (‘La Chair'), the study aims to present a fresh viewpoint on how the body and clay communicate with the world. To investigate the seen and unseen, the study grounds itself in Merleau-Ponty's ontology to recognize bodily reasoning, linking it to the principles of 'embodiment symptoms' and leading an expansion of perception beyond dualistic frameworks where the mind and body intersect. The 'flesh,' as discovered in Merleau-Ponty's later writings, exists as a foundation offering potential for communication within an intersecting world. Through an exploration of how 'flesh' emerges and communicates in artistic expression and appreciation, the study understands the relationship between the artist, artwork, and audience through the intertwining of body and 'flesh,' drawing from early artistic investigations by Antony Gormley, a sculptor. Therefore, this study proposes a theoretical exploration of 'flesh' and artistic research as a backdrop for contemplating the relationship between clay and the body, suggesting that clay functions as a medium embodying 'flesh' and presents the possibility of pottery as a being open to communication with the world.

본 연구는 메를로 퐁티의 존재론과 세계의 얽힘에 대한 사유를 수용하고, 연구자의 몸을 통해 작품세계를 새롭게 전개해 나가려는 시도이다. 도자 작품이 몸의 사유를 담는 방식에 대한 이론적 근거를마련하고 몸과 흙이 관계 맺는 복합적 관계성에 대한 이해의 필요성을 느끼며 메를로 퐁티의 현상학적이해와 ‘살(La Chair)’에 대한 연구를 기반으로 몸과 흙이 세계와의 소통을 이루는 것에 관한 새로운 시각을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 보이는 것과 보이지 않는 것에 관한 연구를 위해 메를로 퐁티의존재론을 기반으로 몸의 사유를 인식하고 ‘신체화 증상’의 원리와 연결 지으며 정신과 신체가 교차하는 몸에 대한 고찰로 이분법적 지각에서 벗어난 인식의 확장을 주도한다. ‘살’이 예술적 표현과감상에서 생성되고 소통하는 방식을 탐구하는 과정으로 인체 조각가 앤토니 곰리(Antony Gormley)의초기 작품 연구를 통해 작가와 작품, 관객 사이의 관계를 몸과 ‘살’의 얽힘으로 이해하고자 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 ‘살’에 대한 이론적 탐구와 작품 연구를 배경으로 흙과 몸 사이의 관계에 대한 고찰을 이루며 흙이 ‘살’로서 기능하는 매체임을 제안하고 세계와의 소통을 위해 열려있는 존재로서의 도자의 가능성을 제시함에 의의가 있다.
