This paper examines the works of Tony Marsh, a ceramic artist born in the United States in 1954, focusing on the evolution of the application of vessels as a formative motif and analyzing his works by series. Marsh employs vessels as his primary medium of artistic expression, transitioning from works that metaphorically represent the function of containing objects to those emphasizing the use of materiality for subjective artistic expression. His early work, , adopts the concept of a vessel's original purpose?containing objects?to chronicle personal experiences and events such as marriage, birth, and life and death within the low, open and concave interior of the vessel. During this process, the role of the vessel expands from the practical concept of 'containing' to an abstract concept that captures invisible emotions and situations. His presents abstract shapes with identical perforations within the porous interior of the vessel, blurring the boundaries between the interior and exterior to express communication and circulation. In his recent work , he approaches the vessel as a canvas for artistic expression, focusing on creations guided by spontaneity and intuition while maintaining the simple form of a vessel. Marsh's work explores the potential of vessels as significant mediators of cultural, natural, and human meanings, extending beyond their mere functional use. This study analyzes the application of vessels in Tony Marsh's works, examining how vessels, as a medium for artistic expression by the artist, incorporate diverse forms of expression and create new sculptural and symbolic possibilities.

이 논문은 1954년 미국에서 출생한 도예가 토니 마쉬의 작품에서 나타나는 기(器)의 적용 변화양상을 조형적 모티브로서 고찰하여 작품을 연작 유형별로 분석한다. 작가는 기를 예술적 표현의 주된 매개체로 삼으며 물체를 담아내는 기능을 은유하는 작품으로부터 작가로서 물성을 이용하고 주관적인 표현을 적용할 수 있는 대상으로서 역할을 강조하는 양상을 보인다. 초기 작업인 는기의 본래 용도인 물건을 담는다는 개념을 차용하여 낮게 열린 형태의 오목한 기 내부에 결혼과 출산, 삶과 죽음 등 자신에게 일어난 사건을 연대기적으로 표현한다. 이 과정에서 기의 역할은 실용성을 강조한 ‘담다’의 개념으로부터 보이지 않는 감정과 상황을 담아내는 추상적 개념으로 확장한다. 시리즈는 다공질의 기 내부에 동일하게 구멍을 낸 추상 형상을 담아내어 기의 안과 밖을 관통시키며 구분하는 경계가 모호하게 함으로써 소통과 순환을 표현하고 있다. 가장 최근 작업인 시리즈에서는 단순한 기의 형태를 갖추면서, 예술적 표현의 캔버스로 사용하여 우연성과 직관에 기반을 둔 표현 작업을 진행한다. 마쉬의 작품에서 기는 문화적, 자연적, 인간적인 의미를 담아내는 중요한 예술적 매개체의 가능성을 탐구하고 있으며, 쓰임의 의도를 넘어서 함축적 의미를 담는 조형적 모티브로서 작용하는 것을 살펴볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 토니 마쉬의 작업에서나타나는 기의 적용 요소를 분석하여 작가의 예술적 표현 매체로써 사용되는 기가 다채로운 표현 형식을 갖추고 새로운 조형성, 상징성을 창출하는 방식을 살펴본다.
