Joseon white porcelain jars hold the largest proportion among the forms of the Joseon Dynasty, and the subject of plant patterns is equally significant. These jars are uniquely Korean symbolic products that embody the inherent language of meaning within the nation's cultural heritage through formative art, alongside their practical purpose in daily life. This study aims to shed new light on the artistic value and aesthetic consciousness of Joseon white porcelain, which has been passed down from its origins to the present. The beauty of Joseon white porcelain serves as an object of aesthetic inquiry and as a material for the fusion of tradition and modernity. The purpose of this study is to explore the formative characteristics of white porcelain jars, the techniques of decorative patterns (si-mun), and the aesthetic meanings of these patterns to identify elements that can be applied to contemporary art. By doing so, the study seeks to examine the evolution and background of Joseon white porcelain, define the overall characteristics of these jars, and understand the flow of historical trends. Additionally, by establishing the types of decorative techniques and the meanings of the patterns, the study aims to facilitate understanding. The research focuses on the 18th to 19th centuries, a period marked by cultural renaissance, where social changes and international trade led to the subjective reflection of foreign styles. These changes in the period are connected to the development of ceramic culture. Based on this, the study distinguishes and comparatively analyzes blue-and-white porcelain, iron-painted porcelain, and copper-red porcelain decorated with plant patterns on jars, comprehensively researching the characteristics of these decorative techniques. The study reveals that the patterns on the jars are characterized by freedom and diversity, rather than schematic designs. Furthermore, the study categorizes different types of jars to derive design elements, and analyzes the techniques of expression and formative characteristics. By analyzing cases of works utilizing plant patterns on white porcelain jars, the study aims to promote the inheritance and development of traditional ceramic culture, highlighting expression techniques and formative aspects suitable for the present day. The significance of this study lies in its contribution as a resource that can suggest new directions for the expansion of contemporary ceramic expression.

조선백자 항아리는 조선시대 기형 중에 가장 큰 비중을 차지하고 있다. 식물 문양의 소재 또한 그러하다. 이것은 인간이 생활에서 사용하기 위한 실용적인 목적과 아울러 민족의 내면에 내재한 함의의언어를 조형 예술로 구현한 한국 고유의 표상적 산물이다. 이에 따라 조선백자의 근원과 현대까지 계승되어 오는 백자의 예술적 가치와 미의식을 재조명하고자 한다. 조선백자의 아름다움은 미적 탐구의대상이며, 전통과 현대를 아우를 수 있는 융합의 제재이다. 본 연구는 백자 항아리의 조형성과 시문((試紋)의 표현기법 그리고 문양의 미학적 의미를 연구하여현대 미술에 응용할 수 있는 요소를 모색하는 것에 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 통해 조선백자의 변천과배경을 살펴보고 항아리의 전반적인 내용을 정의하여 시대적 흐름을 알아보고자 하였다. 또한 시문 기법 종류 및 문양의 의미를 정립함으로써, 이해를 돕고자 한다. 연구 범위로는 18세기~ 19세기를 중점으로 연구하였으며, 무엇보다 이 시기는 사회의 변화와 국가 무역을 통해 외래양식 문화를 주체적으로반영하여 나타나는 현상으로 문예 부흥기를 맞이하게 된다. 이러한 시대적 변화의 양상은 도자 문화의발전으로 연결된다. 이를 토대로 항아리에 식물 문양으로 시문 한 청화, 철화, 진사백자를 구분하여 비교분석하고 시문의 특징을 포괄적으로 연구하였다. 시문의 양상은 도식화 적인 면모보다는 그 양식이자유로우며 다양성을 구사하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 항아리 종류를 분류하여 디자인 요소를 도출하고 표현기법 및 조형적 특징을 분석하였다. 이에 따라 백자 항아리에 식물 문양을 활용한 작품사례를 분석하여 전통 도자 문화의 계승 발전을 도모하고자 하였으며, 현시대에 부합하는 표현기법과 조형성을 조명하여, 현대 도예의 표현 확장에 새로운 방향을 제시할 수 있는 자료로 기여되기를 바란다.
