This paper explores the role of literary thought-a facet relatively overlooked in existing scholarship on E. H. Carr-specifically focusing on the postmodern ideology and intellectual transition forged through his reception of Dostoevsky's novels. While serving in Eastern Europe as a young diplomat, Carr's engagement with Dostoevsky revealed a world radically different from the British center of modernity. This literary immersion prompted him to introspectively evaluate his own background and imagine an alternative, more refined global future. To trace the path of Carr's internal awakening, this study employs a synthesis of structural literary analysis and contextual historical criticism, which serves to verify the text while simultaneously unearthing its underlying historical strata. By doing so, the paper investigates the intellectual trajectory of E. H. Carr-from a budding critic to a master historian-across the fields of intellectual, ideological and literary history. Ultimately, this work makes a significant contribution to assessing the achievements and failures of the modern West through the combined lenses of history and literature.

본 논문은 영국의 역사학자 E. H. 카에 대한 기존 연구에서 상대적으로 주목받지 못했던 문학적 사유의 역할 곧 도스토옙스키 소설의 수용을 통해 형성되는 탈근대적 사상과 지적 전환을 다루는 글이다. 젊은 시절, 동유럽의 외교관으로 활동하던 카는 도스토옙스키의 작품들을 읽으며 근대 사회의 중심이라 할 수 있는 영국과 전혀 다르면서도 인류애 넘치는 세계를 만나게 되었고 자신의 사회를 성찰하며 더 나은 세상을 상상할 수 있었다. 문학적 경험을 통해 시대적 한계를 넘어서려 했던 카의 내면적 각성 경로를 추적하기 위해 본 연구는 텍스트의 내부 구조를 분석하는 문학비평과 문헌의 생성 배경 및 작가의 의도를 파악하는 데 주력하는 역사비평을 결합하여 작품을 검증하면서도 그 안에 담긴 역사적 층위를 함께 읽어내는 통합적 접근방식을 선택한다. 그리하여 신진 문학 평론가로 시작해 소비에트사의 대가로 변모하는 석학 카의 지적 출발점을 지성사와 문학사 그리고 사상사에 비추어 다차원적으로 검증해보려 한다. 요컨대 역사와 문학이란 렌즈를 통해 서구가 성취한 근대세계에 대한 명암을 탐구하며 그 한계와 가능성을 타진해보려는 것이다.
