An Exploratory Study on Recognizing the Artistry of AI Creations

- Controversy is brewing over whether the artistry of AI-generated works should be recognized. The artistry of artworks is closely related to creativity, which is generally evaluated either in terms of the resulting outcome or the creative thinking process that produces it. Accordingly, artistry can also be considered from these two perspectives. Assessing AI-generated works as being superior or equivalent to those created by humans constitutes an evaluation from the standpoint of the final outcome rather than the creative process. This study compared and analyzed AI's genetic algorithms with a creativity system model from the perspective of the creative process, confirming that the computational process of AI genetic algorithms resembles the creative thinking process observed in human artists. The results of this study suggest that, if AI-generated creative works are evaluated as equivalent or comparable to human artworks from an outcome-based perspective, this can support the claim that the artistic value of AI-generated works may be recognized, insofar as the computational processes of genetic algorithms can be understood as structurally and functionally corresponding to artists creative cognitive processes. Furthermore, these findings provide grounds for strengthening the argument that AI may be regarded as a subject of creative production.

- AI 창작물의 예술성 인정 여부에 대한 논란이 일고 있다. 예술작품의 예술성은 창의성과 관련된 개념으로 받아들여져 왔다. 일반적으로 창의성은 창작된 결과물 관점에서 평가되거나 결과물을 만들어 내는 창의적 사고 과정으로 평가된다. 이에 따라 예술성도 두 관점에서 논의될 수 있다. AI가 생성한 창작물을 인간의 예술작품보다 우수하거나 비슷하다고 평가하는 것은 결과물 관점의 평가이다. 본 연구는 후자의 관점에서 AI의 유전 알고리즘과 창의성 시스템 모델을 비교 분석하고, AI 유전 알고리즘의 연산 과정이 예술가의 창작 과정에서 나타나는 창의적 사고 과정과 유사함을 확인하였다. 이는 AI가 생성한 창작물이 결과물 관점에서 인간의 예술작품과 동등하거나 유사한 평가를 받는다면, AI 유전 알고리즘의 연산 과정이 예술가의 창의적 사고 과정과 구조적·기능적으로 대응될 수 있다는 점에서, AI 창작물의 예술성을 인정할 수 있다는 주장을 지지할 수 있으며, 나아가 AI를 창작의 주체로 간주할 수 있다는 논의를 강화하는 근거를 제공한다.
