This study examines how experiences of separation from a shaman mother, early assumption of adult responsibilities, lifelong caregiving labor, relational wounds and reconstruction, and healing through literacy intersect to shape the identity of an elderly woman, Youngseon (aged 81), using a narrative inquiry approach. Based on five in-depth interviews, the participant's life story was interpreted within the dimensions of temporality, sociality, and place. The findings were organized into seven core narrative categories: (1) emotional stability and affection experienced in the maternal grandparents' household, (2) household separation and educational deprivation, (3) the formation of han (deep-seated resentment and sorrow) following the mother's gambling and abandonment, (4) premature adulthood as a child household head, (5) complex marital relationships and emotional reconfiguration through caregiving, (6) emotional release and self-narrative reconstruction through literacy education in later life, and (7) reflection and emotional reorganization in old age. This study demonstrates that the life narrative of a single elderly woman encapsulates the structural suffering and emotional history shared by a generation of Korean women who experienced war, poverty, caregiving burdens, and educational exclusion. Furthermore, the findings suggest the need for social welfare practices and policies that integrate literacy education with emotional support for older women, highlighting the importance of narrative- and emotion-centered approaches in social work.

본 연구는 무속인 어머니와의 단절, 조기 성인화, 돌봄노동, 관계적 상처와 재구성, 문해를 통한 치유라는 주제가 한 노년 여성인 영선(81세)의 생애에서 어떻게 교차하며 정체성을 형성해 왔는지를 내러티브 탐구 방법을 통해 분석하였다. 총 5회의 심층면담을 기반으로 영선의 생애를 시간성·사회성·장소성의 틀에서 해석하였으며, 연구결과는 일곱 개의 핵심 범주로 도출되었다. 첫째, 외가에서의 안정과 조부의 사랑, 둘째, 분가와 교육 박탈, 셋째, 무속인 어머니의 도박·가출로 인한 '한(恨)'의 형성, 넷째, 소녀가장으로서의 조기 성인화, 다섯째, 결혼 이후의 복합적 관계와 정서적 재구성, 여섯째, 문해교육을 통한 감정 해방 및 자기서사 재구성, 일곱째, 노년기의 성찰과 생애말기 정서이다. 본 연구는 한 여성의 생애사가 전후 한국 여성 세대가 공유해 온 구조적 고통과 정서의 역사를 응축적으로 보여줌을 밝히며, 노년 여성 문해교육과 정서 지원을 통합한 사회복지 실천 및 정책 설계의 필요성을 제언한다.
