This study situates M. K. Čiurlionis's symphonic poem The Sea (Jūra) and related seascape paintings within the Symbolist context of the Russian "Silver Age," where intermedial dialogue between music and visual art was central. It examines how Čiurlionis constructed a distinctive form of music-image synesthesia through shared compositional logic across auditory and visual media. An analytical framework based on temporal proportion, composite energy levels, and three structural archetypes-mirror, flow, and layering-was developed to analyze the formal structure, motivic development, and texture of The Sea. These musical findings were then compared with the upward spatial stratification, wave-like superposition, and recurring colour bands in the Sea Sonata painting cycle. The results reveal consistent structural correspondences between musical temporality and pictorial spatiality, indicating that Čiurlionis employed common organizational principles rather than metaphorical translation. By identifying mirror, flow, and layering as generative mechanisms linking sound and image, this study proposes a concrete methodological model for intermedial analysis in Symbolist art and deepens understanding of Čiurlionis's cross-media creativity.

본 연구는 M. K. Čiurlionis의 교향시 <바다(Jūra)>와 관련 해경(海景) 회화들을 음악과 시각예술 간의 매개적 대화가 핵심 미학으로 작동하던 러시아 '은빛 시대(Silver Age)'의 상징주의적 맥락 속에 위치시킨다. 본 연구의 목적은 M. K. Čiurlionis가 청각과 시각 매체 전반에 걸친 공통의 작곡적·구성적 논리를 통해 독자적인 음악-이미지 공감각을 어떠한 방식으로 구축하였는지를 규명하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 시간적 비례, 복합 에너지 수준, 그리고 '미러링-유동-중첩'이라는 세 가지 구조적 원형을 중심으로 한 분석 틀을 설정하고, <바다>의 형식 구조, 동기 전개, 질감 조직을 체계적으로 분석하였다. 이어서 이러한 음악적 분석 결과를 <바다> 회화 연작에 나타나는 상향적 공간 층위, 파동적 중첩 구조, 반복적으로 출현하는 색채 띠와의 비교를 통해 교차 매체적으로 검토하였다. 분석 결과, 음악적 시간성과 회화적 공간성 사이에는 일관된 구조적 대응 관계가 존재함이 확인되었으며, 이는 M. K. Čiurlionis가 단순한 은유적 전이를 넘어 공통의 조직 원리를 활용하였음을 시사한다. 나아가 본 연구는 거울, 흐름, 중첩이 소리와 이미지를 매개하는 생성적 구조 메커니즘으로 기능함을 밝힘으로써, 상징주의 예술의 매개적 구조를 분석하기 위한 구체적인 방법론적 모델을 제시하고, M. K. Čiurlionis의 매체 간 창작 특성에 대한 이해를 심화한다.
