This study explores the possibility of establishing 'Cognitive History' as a new historical theory that investigates how the mechanisms of human cognitive processes influence historical perception. Unlike traditional historiography, which has focused on political and economic structures or macro-level institutional changes, cognitive history pays close attention to how internal cognitive mechanisms—such as stereotypes, prejudices, images, representations, and cognitive biases—distort or reconstruct historical facts. History does not unfold solely through reason and rationality; it is also deeply affected by non-scientific and emotional factors, such as exclusivity toward others or standardized stereotypes. In particular, German 'Historical Stereotype Research' has provided a methodological foundation for cognitive history by clarifying how representations filtered through the subject's perception, rather than the world itself, can cause social conflict or strengthen community solidarity. Through multidisciplinary connections with related fields such as psychology, neuroscience, and linguistic philosophy, cognitive history analyzes the decision-making processes of historical figures, the reconstruction of memory, and the perception of time and space. This enables new interpretations of historical sources and serves to bridge the gap between microscopic cognitive processes and macroscopic historical changes. In conclusion, cognitive history is expected to contribute to increasing the social utility of history by resolving historical conflicts between nations and promoting understanding and communication across race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and generations.

본 연구는 인간의 인지 과정에 작용하는 기제들이 역사인식에 미치는 영향을 탐구하는 ‘인지사학(Cognitive History)’이라는 새로운 역사 이론의 정립 가능성을 모색한다. 전통적 역사학이 정치⋅경제적 구조나 거시적 제도 변화에 집중해 온 것과 달리, 인지사학은 고정관념, 편견, 이미지, 표상, 인지편향 등 인간의 내면적 인지 기제가 역사적 사실을 어떻게 왜곡하거나 재구성하는지에 주목한다. 역사는 이성과 합리성에 의해서만 전개되는 것이 아니라, 타자에 대한 배타성이나 정형화된 고정관념 같은 비과학적⋅정서적 요인에 의해서도 깊은 영향을 받는다. 특히 독일의 ‘역사적 스테레오타입 연구’는 세계 그 자체가 아닌 인식 주체의 필터를 거친 표상이 사회적 갈등을 야기하거나 공동체의 결속을 강화하는 과정을 규명하며 인지사학의 방법론적 토대를 제공했다. 인지사학은 심리학, 뇌과학, 언어철학 등 인접 학문과의 다학제적 연계를 통해 과거 인물들의 의사결정 방식, 기억의 재구성 과정, 시공간 인지 등을 분석한다. 이는 사료에 대한 새로운 해석을 가능하게 하며, 미시적 인지 과정과 거시적 역사 변동 사이의 간극을 메우는 역할을 한다. 결론적으로 인지사학은 국가 간의 역사 갈등을 해소하고 인종⋅민족⋅종교⋅젠더⋅세대 간의 이해와 소통을 증진하는 등 역사학의 사회적 효용성을 높이는 데 기여할 것으로 전망된다.
