Liminality of Water and the Form of Horror?A Study of Water Imagery in Cho Ye-eun’s Fiction

- This study examines the recurring imagery of water in Cho Ye-eun’s fiction, not as a mere background element or generic ornament, but as a central formal device through which horror is organised. Drawing on the concept of liminality, how water imagery constructs, destabilises, and ultimately undermines the stability of boundaries within the narrative is explored. The discussion focuses on the novels Waiting for the Tide (Manjo-reul Gidari-myeo) and Fins in the Mouth (Ipsok Jineureomi), as well as the short story ‘Love in the Marsh’ (Seupji-ui Sarang). In Cho Ye-eun’s fiction, water does not function as a fixed symbol; rather, water operates as a medium that consistently generates liminal states while being differently configured in each work. In Waiting for the Tide, through the cyclical rhythm of tide thereby shaping horror as a sensation of return. In Fins in the Mouth, the water in the tank suspends perceptual closure at the threshold between visibility and invisibility. Sensory cues such as smell, humidity, and humming precede cognition and gradually draw the subject into an affective field. In ‘Love in the Marsh’, the imagery of the stream and flooding reveals both the impossibility of ontological belonging and the excess of relational attachment, thereby articulating a liminal condition in which love and horror are inseparable. Accordingly the study argues that water imagery in Cho Ye-eun’s fiction possesses a distinctive spatiality and aesthetic function. More significantly, her horror narratives are shown to be structured not primarily around the sudden intrusion of external threats, but around the instability and indeterminacy of boundaries themselves. In this respect, water emerges as a key medium through which horror is both formalised and experienced.

- 본고는 조예은 소설에 반복적으로 출현하는 물의 이미지를 단순한 배경이나 장르적 장식이 아니라 공포를 조직하는 핵심적 형식으로 파악하고, 그 미학적 작동 양상을 리미널리티의 관점에서 고찰하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 장편소설 『만조를 기다리며』와 『입속 지느러미』, 단편소설 「습지의 사랑」을 대상으로 삼아 물의 이미지가 경계를 어떻게 구성하고 흔들며 마침내 그 안정성을 약화하는지를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 작품별로 물이 독특한 성질을 지니고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 그 내용을 간략히 정리하면 다음과 같다. 먼저 『만조를 기다리며』에서 바다는 조수의 리듬을 통해 과거와 현재, 삶과 죽음의 경계를 불안정하게 만들며, 공포를 ‘되돌아오는 것’의 감각으로 조직한다. 다음으로 『입속 지느러미』에서는 수조의 물이 가시성과 비가시성의 경계 위에서 지각의 완결을 유예하고, 냄새·습기·허밍과 같은 감각적 징후를 앞세움으로써 인물을 정동적으로 포섭한다. 끝으로 「습지의 사랑」에서는 하천과 범람의 이미지가 존재의 귀속 불가능성과 관계의 과잉 접속을 드러내며, 사랑과 공포가 분리되지 않는 상태를 형상화한다. 이처럼 조예은 소설에서 물은 고정된 상징에 머무르지 않고 작품마다 서로 다른 방식으로 변주되는 한편 일관되게 리미널한 상태를 생성하는 매개로 기능하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이상과 같이 본고는 조예은 소설에서 물의 이미지가 지닌 고유한 장소성과 미학적 기능을 해명하는 동시에, 그의 호러 서사가 경계의 불안정성과 불확정성을 중심으로 전개되고 있음을 밝히고자 하였다.

- 한국문예창작학회(The Society of Korean Literary Creative Writing)는 한국 문학의 새 지평을 열기 위해 문예창작 이론과 문예교육 이론을 연구 계발하여 문 예창작의 새로운 방향을 제시하고자 조직한 학술단체입니다. 전국 대학과 대학원 문예창작 관련학과의 전·현직 전임교수·겸임(초빙)교수· 강 사·대학원 재학 이상자 및 문예창작인들이 회원으로 활동하고 있습니다. 학회의 목적에 적극적으로 동의하는 문학 관련 단체나 문학창작 동호인도 준회원으로 참 여하고 있습니다. 연 2회 학회지를 발간해 학문적 기반을 닦고 있으며, 정기적으로 학술 세미나 와 해외 문학 심포지엄 등 학술 발표회를 개최하여 학문적 교류와 토론의 장을 넓히고 있습니다. 한편으로, 문예창작 캠프·문학기행 등의 창작교육 활동과 창작 학습 행사를 수 시로 진행하면서, 창작·창작이론·창작교육에 관한 활동의 범위를 넓히고 있습니다. 별도로, 문예창작 교육을 받은 문예창작학도들의 진로 개발을 위해 '문예교육지도 교사 자격 시험'도 운영하고 있습니다. The Society of Korean Literary Creative Writing is a pure academic association for the literary cretive writing, and was organized on November 11, 2001 for the purpose of presenting the new direction of literary creative writing by studying all the methods to activate and develop the theories of literary creative writing and its education. Our society is composed of professors or ex-professors, some invited professor, lecturers, graduate students of the dept. of literary creative writing as regular members, and the persons interested in our program as associative members. Our society holds an annual academic meeting-- literary symposium, literary creative writing seminar-- and publishes the journal of our society and our members' anthology of literary works. Added to these, our society has already started a new project to open the way for our literary juniors by providing them with a certificate as a leader and holding a forum for literary creative writing.
