State Succession within Male Communities and Emergence of Techno-Nationalist Fantasy?A Storytelling Study of Alternative-History Web Novels Set in the Sejong Era

- This study examines the characteristics of narrative creation by focusing on web novels in the alternative history genre that depict the reign of King Sejong. While alternative history relies on imagination and playfulness in its interpretation of the past, the spatiotemporal settings and characteristics of historical figures function as relatively fixed narrative units that shape narrative conventions. By analysing nine representative works set during the Sejong period, this study identifies several recurring patterns through close reading and comparative analysis. The first feature is the depiction of characters who exercise their capabilities, accept their historical responsibilities, and receive recognition from King Sejong. This narrative structure foregrounds devotion and labour directed toward a world presented as morally worthy of commitment, thereby reinforcing the moral legitimacy of the imagined historical order. The second feature concerns the historical point of divergence. Across all the web novels examined, authors have consistently reimagined history by preventing Prince Suyang’s accession to the throne and enabling the succession of a legitimate heir. In this process, a consolidated male community composed of princes and officials is conceived of as a central narrative force that stabilises succession and supports royal authority and competence. The third feature is the emergence of techno-nationalism, accompanied by an expansionist imagination. Technological development combined with future knowledge is presented through the narrative logic of colonial expansion and empire-building, a formulation that warrants critical attention insofar as a nation with a history of colonial occupation imaginatively assumes an imperial position. By reimagining Joseon as a modern technological state, these narratives offer a fantasy that vicariously affirms confidence in a Korean model of development and a restored sense of national pride, while simultaneously revealing underlying ideological tensions. This study’s focus on the Sejong period restricts engagement with the broader range of Joseon-era alternative history web novels and narrative codes shared with adjacent genres. These are proposed as a topic for future research.

- 이 연구는 웹소설의 대체역사 장르 중 세종대왕 재위기를 다룬 작품들을 중심으로 웹서사 창작의 특성을 살펴보았다. 대체역사의 역사 해석은 상상력과 유희성을 기반으로 하지만 시공간적 배경과 인물의 특성은 고정적인 화소로 기능하고 있다. 이 연구는 세종기를 다룬 작품에서 반복되는 창작의 첫 번째 특성으로, 자신의 역량을 발휘할 수 있고 그것을 책무로 받아들이는 등장인물이 등장하며 그들의 수고가 세종에 의해 인정받는 것으로 꼽음으로써 가치 있는 세계에 대한 헌신을 특성으로 살폈다. 둘째로는 대체역사 소설에서 작가들이 대체하려는 역사적 분기점이 모두 수양대군의 즉위를 막고 적법한 후계자가 왕위를 계승하게 돕는 것으로 정리하였다. 이를 위해 왕자들과 신하들로 구성된 남성공동체가 공고히 구축되는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 셋째로는 테크노내셔널리즘과 팽창주의적 상상력이다. 미래 지식과 결합한 기술발전은 주변을 식민지화하여 제국을 형성하는 문법으로 등장한다는 점에서 주목해야 한다. 식민지 경험이 있는 국가에서 역으로 제국의 상상력을 펼치기 때문이다. 조선을 근대적 기술국가로 탈바꿈하려는 판타지를 통해 한국형 발전에 대한 자신감, 복권된 자부심을 대리만족하는 판타지를 제시하고 있다는 점에서 문제적이라고 보았다. 세종기에 집중해 전반적인 조선조 대체역사소설의 다채로움을 다루지 못한 점, 인접 장르와 공통적인 코드를 적극적으로 다루지 못한 점은 이 연구의 한계인 만큼 관련해서는 후속 연구로 다루고자 한다.

- 한국문예창작학회(The Society of Korean Literary Creative Writing)는 한국 문학의 새 지평을 열기 위해 문예창작 이론과 문예교육 이론을 연구 계발하여 문 예창작의 새로운 방향을 제시하고자 조직한 학술단체입니다. 전국 대학과 대학원 문예창작 관련학과의 전·현직 전임교수·겸임(초빙)교수· 강 사·대학원 재학 이상자 및 문예창작인들이 회원으로 활동하고 있습니다. 학회의 목적에 적극적으로 동의하는 문학 관련 단체나 문학창작 동호인도 준회원으로 참 여하고 있습니다. 연 2회 학회지를 발간해 학문적 기반을 닦고 있으며, 정기적으로 학술 세미나 와 해외 문학 심포지엄 등 학술 발표회를 개최하여 학문적 교류와 토론의 장을 넓히고 있습니다. 한편으로, 문예창작 캠프·문학기행 등의 창작교육 활동과 창작 학습 행사를 수 시로 진행하면서, 창작·창작이론·창작교육에 관한 활동의 범위를 넓히고 있습니다. 별도로, 문예창작 교육을 받은 문예창작학도들의 진로 개발을 위해 '문예교육지도 교사 자격 시험'도 운영하고 있습니다. The Society of Korean Literary Creative Writing is a pure academic association for the literary cretive writing, and was organized on November 11, 2001 for the purpose of presenting the new direction of literary creative writing by studying all the methods to activate and develop the theories of literary creative writing and its education. Our society is composed of professors or ex-professors, some invited professor, lecturers, graduate students of the dept. of literary creative writing as regular members, and the persons interested in our program as associative members. Our society holds an annual academic meeting-- literary symposium, literary creative writing seminar-- and publishes the journal of our society and our members' anthology of literary works. Added to these, our society has already started a new project to open the way for our literary juniors by providing them with a certificate as a leader and holding a forum for literary creative writing.
