This study investigates the potential of the healing imagination in literature by examining the conflicts and representational modes of the ‘care narrative’ as depicted in contemporary fiction. Focusing on Hwang Jungeun’s I’ll Go on, this paper argues that the novel offers a significant perspective on modern care narratives and the possibilities of literary healing, as it confronts the painful realities of family life while maintaining an orientation toward alternative worlds. This novel scrutinises socially structured forms of violence through the lens of family life and explores an alternative family life. The care imagination at work in the text operates through the creative appropriation of space and the conceptualisation of future-oriented temporality, thereby facilitating the characters’ healing and growth. In I’ll Go on, the gender-based reflections on care illuminate the relationships among characters who form bonds and mature in the face of social poverty and discrimination. The process of character formation and growth through experiences of poverty and discrimination can be conceptualised as a cooperative practice of ‘commoning’, wherein diverse subjects transform one another within a shared space. This process of commoning becomes particularly visible through the creative appropriation of space, and the narrative’s configuration is especially striking in its exposure to the inhuman structures and desolation or space, even as it reconfigures that very space into one of hospitality and healing. Such a mode of appropriating space invites a more multi-layered consideration of the meanings embedded in the novel’s representations of alternative family structures and maternal narratives. That the care imagination in Hwang Jungeun’s fiction opens up a reflection of futurity reveals a subject who, while squarely facing the pessimism of the present, actively sustains an awareness of the possibilities of the future. The work’s careful delineation of the lives of individuals oppressed within a violent social reality, while simultaneously maintaining the possibility of forging solidarity with others, further opens up renewed possibilities for literary healing. Just as the assumption of complete reconciliation and recovery among characters within a literary work cannot itself be regarded as genuine healing, a pessimistic narrative does not necessarily signify the failure of healing. In this sense, the healing significance of literature consists in its narrative effort to apprehend the multidimensionality of life while remaining mindful of the inherent limits?or even the impossibility?of perfect healing.

이 글은 황정은 소설에 나타난 돌봄 서사의 재현 양상을 통해서 문학작품이 지닌 치유적 상상력의 현재적인 가능성을 타진하고자 한다. 황정은의 『계속해보겠습니다』(창비, 2014)는 고통스러운 가족서사의 현실을 직시하면서 새로운 세계로의 지향을 모색한다는 점에서 우리시대의 돌봄 서사와 문학치유의 가능성에 대한 폭넓은 이해를 열어주는 텍스트라고 할 수 있다. 이 소설은 가족의 삶을 매개로 사회적 폭력의 구조적 문제들을 세심하게 들여다보면서 새로운 대안가족의 삶을 탐색한다. 이 과정에서 작동하는 돌봄의 상상력은 공간을 창조적으로 전유하고 미래적 시간을 설계함으로써 인물들의 치유와 성장을 돕게 됨을 알 수 있다. 『계속해보겠습니다』에서 젠더적 고찰을 기반으로 한 돌봄의 사유는 사회적 빈곤과 차별의 상황을 통해 유대를 맺고 성장하는 인물들의 관계를 세심하게 보여준다. 인물들이 변화하고 성장하는 시간은 다양한 주체들이 공동의 장에서 전개하는 커머닝의 과정이라고 할 수 있다. 이 커머닝의 과정은 특히 공간의 창조적 전유를 통해서 드러나는데, 고립된 비인간적 공간을 환대와 치유의 공간으로 변모시키는 서사의 구도가 주목된다. 이러한 공간의 전유 방식은 이 소설이 다루는 대안가족, 모성서사가 지닌 의미를 입체적으로 사유하게 해준다. 황정은 소설이 사유하는 돌봄의 상상력은 현재의 비관성을 직시하면서도 미래에 대한 가능성을 놓지 않는 주체의 적극적인 현실인식을 보여준다. 이 작품이 폭력적인 사회현실 속에 억눌리는 개별자들의 삶을 찬찬히 묘파하는 동시에 타자와의 연대를 꾸려가는 가능성을 놓지 않는 면모도 그런 점에서 문학치유의 가능성을 새롭게 이끌어낸다고 할 수 있다. 문학작품의 갈등과 결말이 완전한 화해와 회복을 가정하는 것 자체를 온전한 치유라고 말하기는 어렵다. 문학작품의 치유적 의미는 그것의 불가능성을 염두에 두고 삶의 입체성을 포착하려는 서사적 노력에서 가능하다는 점을 확인할 수 있다.
