This study focuses on the post-depositional processes of tombs, a topic that has received relatively little attention in Korean archaeology. It analyzes the transformations that occurred after tomb construction, with particular emphasis on human intentionality and responses to these changes. In addition, the study examines how past communities perceived and accommodated tomb transformations caused by post-depositional processes within burial grounds, and how these perceptions influenced the construction of subsequent tombs. Responses to post-depositional processes are classified into three types: (1) rejection of artificial tomb form, in which no constructed tomb morphology existed from the outset; (2-1) adaptation to post-depositional processes, where an external tomb form was initially constructed but subsequently deteriorated or disappeared; and (2-2) resistance to post-depositional processes, characterized by the construction of durable tomb forms intended to be maintained over long periods. In analyzing the formation of burial grounds, the study explores correlations between changes in tomb perception and chronological shifts from dolmen clusters, to burial grounds with low earthen mounds, and finally to high-mound cemetery complexes. Finally, the study emphasizes the necessity of future research incorporating micromorphological and sedimentological–pedological analyses, and suggests that a multi-scalar approach to post-depositional processes in tomb studies may offer new perspectives in archaeological research.

이 논문은 한국 고고학에서 상대적으로 주목받지 못했던 무덤의 후퇴적 과정(post-depo sitional process)에 초점을 맞춰, 무덤 축조 이후 나타난 변형 결과와 이에 대한 인간의 의도성, 대응 방식을 분석하였다. 또한 무덤들이 모인 묘역 안에서도 옛사람들이 후퇴적 과정에 따른 무덤 변형을 어떻게 수용했고 후속 무덤이 축조될 시에 어떤 방식으로 영향을 주었는지를 고찰하였다. 무덤 후퇴적 과정에 대한 대응 방식을 다음과 같이 분류하였다. ① 인공적 묘형 거부(본래부터 구축되지 않아 무덤 형상이 없는 경우), ②-1 후퇴적 과정에 대한 순응(무덤 외형을 구축했으나 망실되는 경우), ②-2 후퇴적 과정에 대한 저항(오래도록 유지되게끔 무덤 외형을 구축한 경우) 의 세 가지 유형으로 구분된다. 묘역 형성 과정의 분석에서는 지석묘 군집 → 저평한 봉분을 지 닌 무덤 묘역 → 고총 묘역으로 시기별로 달라짐에 따라 무덤 인식 변화가 상관관계가 있는지를 살펴보았다. 향후 연구에는 미세지형학 및 퇴적물-토양학적 분석의 필요성을 제기하였으며, 무덤 후퇴적 과 정 연구가 다각도로 접근되어 새로운 연구 관점을 제시할 수 있기를 기대한다.
