As a global cultural phenomenon marked by strong transnational mobility and enduring social influence, the Korean Wave has never had a fixed meaning. Rather, it has been continuously interpreted and discursively reconfigured by overseas knowledge communities. The Korean Wave refers to the cultural phenomenon in which Korean popular culture and related cultural products first emerged in East Asia and later expanded into global circulation, consumption, and identity formation. For Korean academia, examining this process is not only a way to deepen the understanding of the Korean Wave’s transnational dissemination and sociocultural effects, but also a means of reflecting on how its international meanings are produced, interpreted, and bounded within the knowledge fields of receiving societies. In this regard, China deserves particular attention. It has been one of the major receiving contexts of the Korean Wave and, at the same time, an important site of knowledge production where the Korean Wave has been discussed in relation to China’s cultural industry, national image, and international communication strategy. Looking back over the past three decades, from the 'Korean Wave boom' to the chill of the 'Korean Wave ban' and the recent phase of 'cultural recontact', Chinese academic definitions, interpretations, and evaluations of the Korean Wave have undergone several shifts in response to changing historical conditions and Korea–China relations. Against this backdrop, this study examines the discursive evolution of Korean Wave research in Chinese academia from 1995 to 2025 from the perspective of knowledge production. It finds that Chinese academic understandings of the Korean Wave have shifted from phenomenon-oriented explanation to mechanism-based analysis and, more recently, to governance-oriented reflection. In this process, the Korean Wave has moved beyond a single object of cultural consumption and has become an important reference through which China reflects on its national image, cultural industry development, and international communication capacity. This study argues that Chinese academia’s knowledge production on the Korean Wave not only reflects changes in China’s own problem consciousness, but also reveals how the Korean Wave has been reconceptualized within an overseas knowledge field as a transnational cultural phenomenon. Therefore, examining Chinese academic research on the Korean Wave offers a useful entry point for understanding how China’s awareness of cultural globalization has been formed and adjusted, while also providing Korean academia with a meaningful reference for reconsidering the global dissemination and knowledge-making process of the Korean Wave from the perspective of a receiving society.

글로벌한 문화현상으로서 한류는 뚜렷한 초국적 유동성과 지속적인 사회적 영향력을 지니며, 그 의미 역시 고정된 것이 아니라 해외 지식계의 해석과 담론적 재구성을 거치며 계속 변화해 왔다. 한류는 한국 대중문화 및 관련 문화 상품이 동아시아에서 부상한 뒤 전 세계적 전파, 소비, 정체성 형성으로 확장된 문화 현상을 가리킨다. 한국 학계의 입장에서 이러한 과정을 살펴보는 것은 한류의 초국적 확산 방식과 사회문화적 효과를 이해하는 데 그치지 않고, 한류의 국제적 의미가 수용국의 지식장 안에서 어떻게 생성되고 해석되며, 그 담론적 경계가 어떤 방식으로 설정되는지를 성찰하게 한다. 특히 중국은 한류의 주요 수용국이자 동시에 한류를 자국의 문화산업, 국가 이미지, 국제 커뮤니케이션 전략과 연결해 논의해 온 중요한 지식생산의 공간이라는 점에서 주목할 필요가 있다. 지난 30년을 되돌아보면, ‘한류 열풍’에서 ‘한한령의 한파’를 거쳐 오늘날의 ‘문화적 재접촉’에 이르기까지, 중국 학계의 한류에 대한 규정, 해석, 평가 역시 시대적 조건과 양국 관계의 변화 속에서 여러 차례 전환되어 왔다. 본 논문은 지식생산의 분석 시각을 바탕으로 1995년부터 2025년까지 중국 학계의 한류 연구에 나타난 담론 변천을 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 중국 학계의 한류 인식은 현상 해석에서 메커니즘 분석으로, 다시 거버넌스 성찰로 이동해 왔으며, 한류 또한 단일한 문화 소비 현상에 머물지 않고 중국이 자국의 국가 이미지, 문화산업 발전 및 국제 커뮤니케이션 역량을 성찰하는 과정에서 중요한 준거로 자리 잡았음을 확인하였다. 본 논문은 중국 학계의 한류 지식생산이 중국 사회 내부의 문제의식 변화를 반영하는 동시에, 한류가 초국적 문화현상으로서 해외 지식장(場) 안에서 재개념화되는 과정을 보여준다고 본다. 따라서 중국 학계의 한류 연구를 검토하는 작업은 중국의 문화 세계화 문제의식이 어떻게 형성되고 조정되어 왔는지를 이해하는 통로가 되며, 한국 학계가 수용국의 시각에서 한류의 세계적 확산과 그 지식화 과정을 성찰하는 데에도 유의미한 참조점을 제공한다.
