Purpose of Research : This study aims to broaden the understanding of Christian suffering by conducting interviews with participants who have experienced hardships either for the sake of the gospel or because of the gospel, and by analyzing their experiences and the meanings of such gospel-related suffering. Research Content and Method : This study was conducted as a qualitative research to provide an in-depth description of participants’ experiences, given the scarcity of previous studies on gospel-related suffering. The researcher conducted interviews with nine participants engaged in diverse forms of ministry, including missionaries, pastors, a director of a nursing home, a vice director of a child care facility, a principal of a school for North Korean defectors, and a professor who actively carries out frontline ministry opposing homosexuality and same-sex marriage while battling liver cancer. The results of these interviews were then analyzed. Conclusion and Suggestions : The central concept that permeated the stories of the research participants who experienced suffering for the gospel was “trust in God.” Their experiences involved obedience to the divine calling and endurance with a sense of calling, bearing severe hardship, encountering God amid suffering, giving thanks in suffering, and passing through suffering with patient waiting. For the research participants, suffering was understood as an essential virtue for a servant called by God, a path to draw near to God, a divine remedy revealing one’s weakness, a means of blessing the community, and a stage on which Satan operates. In a period when Korean Christianity faces challenges and trials, it is hoped that the experiences and interpretations of God’s people who have endured suffering because of and for the gospel will contribute to the advancement of the gospel.

연구 목적 : 본 연구는 복음을 위하여 또는 복음으로 인하여 어려움을 겪은 신앙인들의 경험과 그 의미를 면담하여 분석함으로 기독교인의 고난에 대한 이해를 확장하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구내용 및 방법 : 본 연구는 복음 고난에 관한 선행연구가 거의 없는 상황에서 연구참여자들의 경험을 구체적으로 묘사하기 위해 질적연구로 수행되었다. 연구자는 선교사, 목사, 양로원 시설장, 아동양육시설 부원장, 탈북민 학교 교장, 간암 투병 중 동성애 동성혼 반대 사역을 최전방에서 실천하는 교수 등 다양한 사역의 배경을 가진 연구참여자 9명과 면담하여 그 결과를 분석하였다. 결론 및 제언 : 복음 고난을 경험한 연구참여자들의 스토리를 관통하는 중심 개념은 ‘하나님을 향한 신뢰’로, 그들의 경험은 부르심에 대한 순종과 사명감으로의 인내, 강도 높은 고난의 감내, 고난 중 하나님과 조우, 고난 가운데의 감사, 기다림을 통한 고난 통과로 나타났다. 연구참여자들에게 고난은 사명자의 필수 덕목, 하나님께 나아가는 길, 자신의 연약함을 깨닫게 하는 처방전, 공동체에 유익을 끼치는 도구, 사탄이 일하는 무대로 이해되었다. 한국 기독교가 도전과 시련을 맞이한 시기에 본 연구에서 제시한 복음으로 인한 고난 그리고 복음을 위한 고난을 감내한 하나님 백성의 경험과 그 해석이 복음 전파에 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.
