Today we are entering a new machine age called the ‘digital transformation’. Consequently, we are experiencing unprecedented chaos and crisis, amid blind faith in technology's efficacy and forgetfulness of its dangers. This situation presents us with two urgent tasks. One is establishing an ideological direction capable of coordinating technological unilateralism with newly designed social purposes amid increasing uncertainty. The other is establishing a new humanity befitting the era of digital transformation. To address these challenges, this study critically analyzes cybernetics theory, which made the most significant contribution to shaping today's digital environment, based on the technological philosophy of American philosopher Lewis Mumford. It demonstrates the meaning and value of a humanistic perspective on technology in overcoming contemporary crises. To this end, this study will reconstruct Mumford's scattered positions on cybernetics and computer engineering from his later works, focusing on the dual movement of technology and art and the conceptual framework of the megamachine-megatechnics, to derive implications for the problems confronting us in the 21st century. By illuminating the roots of the future that have always existed in the past within the horizons of history and culture, Mumford's insight and humanistic perspective,, which provided new insights into the future and a profound sense of perspective, will offer new solutions to the crisis of civilizational transformation.

현재 인류는‘디지털 전환’이라는 새로운 기계시대에 들어서고 있다. 이에 따라 기술의 효능에 대한 맹신과 기술의 위험성에 대한 망각 속에서 인류는 미증유의 혼란과 위기를 경험하고 있다. 이런 상황은 두 가지 긴급한 과제를 제시한다. 하나는 점증하는 불확실성 속에서 기술일방주의를 새롭게 설계된 사회적 목적에 걸맞게 조율할 수 있는 사상적 방향성의 정립이고, 다른 하나는 디지털 전환의 시대에 걸맞은 새로운 인간성의 확립이다. 인류가 직면한 이런 과제를 해결하기 위해서 본 연구는 오늘날의 디지털 환경을 조성하는 데 가장 중요한 기여를 한 사이버네틱스를 미국의 기술철학자 루이스 멈퍼드의 기술철학을 바탕으로 비판적으로 분석함으로써 기술에 대한 인본주의 관점이 현대의 위기를 돌파하는 데 어떤 의미와 가치를 부여하는지를 보여줄 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 멈퍼드의 후기 저작에 흩어져 있는 사이버네틱스와 컴퓨터 공학에 대한 입장을 기술과 예술의 이중 운동과 거대기계-거대테크닉의 개념 틀을 중심으로 재구성함으로써 21세기 우리가 당면한 문제에 시사점을 얻고자 할 것이다. 역사와 문화의 지평에서 항상 과거에 존재했던 미래의 뿌리를 밝힘으로써 미래에 대한 새로운 통찰과 깊이 있는 원근감을 제공한 멈퍼드의 혜안과 인본주의 관점은 문명 전환의 위기에 새로운 해법을 제시할 것이다.
