After the deaths of the main figures of the Horak Debate(湖洛論爭), the central scholar who achieved notable academic achievements in the Hoseo region and continued that academic lineage into the early 20th century was Gwajae(過齋) Kim Jeong-mook(金正默, 1739~1799). Notable among his scholarship is his systematic critique of Han Won-jin’s(韓元震) Neo-Confucianism and Classics, which he wrote in a series of works. Although he did not present a favorable view of the Horak Debate’s scholarship through his critique of Han Won-jin, his criticism did not immediately signal a shift toward a pessimistic view. Behind his criticism of Han Won-jin, he wanted to confirm and inherit the scholarship of the sages such as Yulgok(栗谷), Kim Jang-saeng(金長生, 1548~1631), and Song Si-yeol(宋時烈, 16071689). His academic stance and direction led to the rejection of the Horak Debate, which was highlighted by his immediate disciples including Song Chi-gyu(宋穉圭, 1759-1838), and his Jaejeon(再傳) and Samjeon(三傳) disciples such as Song Geun-su(宋近洙, 1818~1903) and Song Byeong-seon(宋秉璿, 1836~1905). In this respect, Kim Jeong- mook’s scholarship can be considered one of the important materials for confirming the aspects after the Horak Debate. This paper, mindful of the limited academic interest in Kim Jeong- muk, examines his academic stance and influence, aiming to establish his place in the history of thought. To this end, I first focus on the fact that his academic roots lie in his family's learning, which originated with Yulgok and was further refined by his ancestors Kim Jang-saeng, Song Si-yeol, and Jeong Ho(鄭澔, 1648-1736). This paper aims to examine the tradition of his family's learning, focusing on Yulgok Studies(栗谷學) and the political stance of the Noron(老論) faction. Furthermore, I note that his academic stance was concretized through his critique of Han Won-jin. Therefore, I broadly examine Han Won-jin’s critiques of Confucianism and Neo-Confucianism to establish his scholarly position. Building on this examination, I examine how his scholarship was understood and inherited by subsequent scholars, aiming to present his position and influence in the history of thought.

호락논쟁(湖洛論爭)의 주체들이 사망한 이후에 호서 지역에서 뚜렷한 학문적 성취를 이루며 그 학맥을 20세기 초반까지 이어간 대표적인 학자는 과재(過齋) 김정묵(金正默, 1739~ 1799)이라 할 수 있다. 그의 학문에서 주목되는 것은 한원진(韓元震)의 성리학과 경학(經學)에 대해 체계적인 비판을 진행하며 일련의 저술을 남겼다는 점을 손꼽을 수 있다. 비록 그는 한원진 비판을 통해 호론의 학문에 대해 우호적인 견해를 제시하지 않았지만, 그의 한원진 비판은 곧바로 낙론으로의 전환을 의미하는 것이 아니었다. 그는 한원진 비판 이면에는 율곡과 김장생(金長生), 그리고 송시열(宋時烈) 등 선현의 학문을 확인하고 이를 계승하고자 뜻이 자리하고 있었고, 그의 이러한 학문적 입장과 지향은 그의 문하에서 배출된 송치규(宋穉圭)를 비롯한 직전 제자, 그리고 송근수(宋近洙)와 송병선(宋秉璿) 등 재전 및 삼전 제자들이 부각한 호락논쟁의 지양으로 이어졌다. 이러한 점에서 김정묵의 학문은 호락논쟁 이후의 면모를 확인하는 중요한 자료 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 이 논문에서는 그간 학계의 김정묵에 대한 미미한 관심에 유의하여 김정묵의 학문적 입장과 영향 등을 검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 그의 사상사적 위상을 제시하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 그의 학문 연원이 율곡에게서 비롯되어 그의 선조인 김장생과 송시열, 정호(鄭澔, 1648~1736) 등을 거쳐 구체화한 그의 가학(家學)에 있다는 점에 주목하여 그의 가학 전통을 율곡학(栗谷學)과 노론(老論)의 정치적 입장을 중심으로 확인하고자 하였다. 그리고 한원진에 대한 비판을 통해 그의 학문적 입장이 구체화하였다는 점에 유의하여 경학과 성리설 전반에 걸친 한원진 비판 내용을 대체로 검토하여 그의 학문적 입장을 확인하고자 하였다. 그리고 이러한 검토를 바탕으로 그의 학문이 어떻게 이해되고 계승되었는지를 그의 학맥을 계승한 이후의 문인들을 통해 확인하여 그의 사상사적 위상과 영향을 제시하고자 하였다.
