This study analyzes the trends in exploitation and exploration research in South Korea over approximately 30 years since March (1991) introduced these concepts. We collected 184 papers indexed in the Korea Citation Index (KCI) and applied Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling techniques.The analysis identified five major research topics, with ”Corporate Innovation and Capabilities” (58 papers, 31.5%) and ”Organizational Innovation Strategy” (46 papers, 25.0%) being the most prominent. Temporal analysis reveals that 44.6% of all papers were published in the recent five years (2021-2025), with a notable surge in digital technology-related research, including ”Digital Transformation and AI Education” (36 papers, 19.6%) and “Machine Learning and Predictive Models” (34 papers, 18.5%). A systematic literature review of 70 key papers revealed that quantitative research (75.7%) dominates, with a heavy concentration on organizational-level studies (75.7%) and manufacturing industries (65.7%). This study provides several practical implications for business management. First, firms should pursue both short-term performance and long-term innovation through strategic ambidextrous management. Second, in the digital transformation era, companies need to balance the exploitation of existing technologies with the exploration of emerging technologies. Third, organizations must strategically manage innovation outcomes and dynamically adjust exploitation-exploration strategies based on environmental changes. This research contributes to the literature by providing the first comprehensive and systematic overview of 30 years of exploitation and exploration research in Korea, offering actionable insights for both academics and practitioners. The findings highlight the growing importance of ambidexterity in navigating digital transformation, managing innovation portfolios, and achieving sustainable competitive advantage in uncertain environments.

본 연구는 March (1991)가 활용과 탐색 개념을 제시한 이후 약 30여 년간 국내에서 수행된 활용과 탐색 관련 연구의 동향을 분석하였다. 한국학술지인용색인(KCI)에 등재된 184편의 논문을 수집하여 LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) 토픽모델링 기법을 적용하였다. 분석 결과, 5개의 주요 연구 주제가 도출되었으며, ‘기업 혁신과 역량’(58편, 31.5%)과 ‘조직 혁신전략’(53편, 28.8%)이 가장 많은 논문을 차지하였다. 시기별 분석 결과, 최근 5년(2021-2025)간 발표된 논문이 전체의 44.6%를 차지하였으며, 특히 ‘디지털 전환과 AI 교육’(26편, 14.1%), ‘머신러닝과 예측모형’(26편, 14.1%) 등 디지털 기술 관련 연구가 급증하였다. 체계적 문헌고찰을 통해 70편의 주요 논문을 분석한 결과, 양적 연구(75.7%)가 주를 이루었으며, 조직 수준 연구(75.7%)에 편중되어 있고, 제조업 연구(65.7%)가 대다수를 차지하는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 실무적 시사점을 제공한다. 첫째, 기업은 전략적 양손잡이 경영을 통해 단기 성과와 장기 혁신을 동시에 추구해야 한다. 둘째, 디지털 전환 시대에 기존 기술의 활용과 신기술의 탐색을 균형있게 추진해야 한다. 셋째, 혁신성과를 전략적으로 관리하고, 동태적 관점에서 활용-탐색 전략을 조정해야 한다. 본 연구는 국내 활용과 탐색 연구 30년의 전체 동향을 체계적으로 파악하고, 연구 방향을 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
