For missional leaders, ‘waiting’ is regarded as a meaningful process in the formation of missional spirituality. Generally, people tend to shy away from the empty space of waiting because they can foresee that it will inevitably be accompanied by suffering and endurance. In Hebrew culture, however, waiting appears to have a deep and rich significance. The Hebrew word kavah(קָוָה) carries the meaning of to weave or to bind, implying a state of connection—a waiting that presupposes being bound to God and united with Him. Another Hebrew word, yahal(יָחַל), encompasses the meanings of ’expectation’ and ‘hope,’ and above all, it includes an active hope that confidently awaits the fulfillment of the covenant. Through the process of waiting, missional leaders patiently and steadfastly carry out the ministry entrusted to them, maturing as they grow in their faith, hope, and love for God. Therefore, waiting is not merely an accessory to missions but is both the process and the very essence of missions. In particular, biblical poetry vividly reveals the faith of believers who, even in the midst of suffering, hope in God and wait expectantly for His response. In Psalm 130, in particular, the psalmist’s waiting is portrayed as enduring suffering while hoping for God’s response. James 5:7–8 mentions waiting with patience, without giving up until the end, just as a farmer waits for a precious harvest. The researcher believes that, in a sense, a missional leader must be someone who knows how to wait and who embraces waiting. Of course, the waiting of missional leaders is always marked by an unpredictable tension between uncertainty and certainty. To be more specific, this is because we may find ourselves in a state of uncertainty—a situation where we cannot determine what will happen after we wait—while also facing a certain situation where things unfold exactly as we hoped and desired; we are situated in the space between these two extremes. However, because this situation exists within the tension between the Kingdom of God that has “already” come and the Kingdom that is “not yet” fully realized, the missionary leader’s waiting serves as a motivation to actively and dynamically enhance and mature his faith, allowing him to continually hold onto hope in God.

선교적 리더들에게 ‘기다림’은 선교적 영성을 형성하는 유의미한 과정으로 여겨진다. 일반적으로 사람들은 기다림이라는 공백의 시간을 꺼리는 경향이 있다. 왜냐하면 그 시간 동안에 경험되는 고통과 인내가 필연적으로 수반(隨伴)됨을 예측할 수 있기 때문이다. 히브리 문화에서의 기다림은 그 의미가 깊고 풍성한 것으로 보인다. 히브리어 ‘카바’(קָוָה)의 의미는 ‘엮다/묶다’라는 연결의 의미를 품고 있는데, 이는 하나님께 자신을 묶어두는 그분과 함께 연결된 상태를 전제하는 기다림을 함의한다. 또 다른 히브리어 ‘야할’(יָחַל)의 의미는 ‘기대’와 ‘소망’의 의미를 내포하고 있으며, 무엇보다도 언약을 확신 있게 기다리는 능동적인 소망을 포함하고 있다. 선교적 리더들은 기다림이라는 과정을 통해 그들 자신에게 맡겨진 사역을 묵묵하게 인내하며 하나님에 대한 믿음, 소망과 사랑을 확신하며 성숙해 나간다. 그러므로 기다림은 선교의 부수물이 아니라, 선교의 과정이자 본질이다. 특히 성경의 시문학에서는 고통의 상황 가운데에서도 하나님을 소망하며 응답을 기대하고 기다리는 성도의 신앙이 잘 드러나 있다. 특히 시편 130편에서 시인의 기다림은 고통 가운데 인내하면서 하나님의 응답을 소망하는 기다림으로 나타난다. 야고보서 5장 7절과 8절에는 농부가 귀한 열매를 기다리는 것과 같이 끝까지 포기하지 않고 인내하는 기다림을 언급하고 있다. 필자는 어떤 의미에서 선교적 리더는 기다릴 줄 아는 사람이며 기다림을 포용하는 사람이어야 한다고 본다. 물론 선교적 리더들의 기다림은 불확정성과 확정성 사이의 예측할 수 없는 긴장이 항상 존재한다. 좀 더 세부적으로 말하자면, 우리는 기다린 후에 어떤 일이 생길지 확정할 수 없는 상황이 있으며, 우리가 바라고 소망하던 대로 이루어지는 확정적인 상황이 있는데, 이 둘 사이에서 확정되지 않은 미확정의 상황 사이에 놓여있을 수 있기 때문이다. 그렇지만 이런 상황은 ‘이미’(already) 도래한 하나님의 나라 ‘그러나 아직은 완전하지 않은’(but not yet) 그분의 나라 사이에서의 긴장 사이에 있으므로 그분을 향한 소망을 지속적으로 품을 수 있다라는 측면에서, 선교적 리더의 기다림은 그의 신앙을 보다 능동적으로, 더욱 역동적으로 향상하며 성숙하도록 하는 영적 동기를 유발한다.
