This study compares the first (1999) and second (2018) editions of Paul Scott Wilson's The Four Pages of the Sermon with the aim of examining the structural transformation, theological deepening, and practical expansion of the Four Pages model, and of exploring its applicability to the Korean church's preaching context. To this end, the study conducts a close comparative reading of the two editions, focusing on four analytical criteria: (1) the distinct function and role of each page, (2) the organic connectivity between the pages, (3) the theological dynamics of the trouble-grace structure, and (4) the reconstruction of preaching language and rhetoric. The analysis demonstrates that the second edition does not merely supplement the first, but substantially reconfigures it by strengthening the procedural concreteness of sermon preparation, refining page transitions and God-centered preaching language, and expanding the dimensions of communal practice and public responsibility. In particular, the systematization of inversion and transposition, the hermeneutical deepening of the "God-is-the-Subject" principle, and the establishment of celebration as an independent homiletical genre are identified as the defining changes of the second edition. These changes can be understood as an effort to objectify the sermon preparation process — which in the first edition relied heavily on the preacher's individual intuition and theological sensibility — through procedural methodology and rhetorical strategy, while integrating the communal and public dimensions of preaching more comprehensively. Furthermore, this study argues that the changes introduced in the second edition can enter into a complementary relationship with the Korean church's traditional three-point sermon structure, and that the Four Pages model can serve as a preaching framework that concretely addresses the pastoral challenges facing the Korean church today, including intergenerational conflict, collective trauma, and the crisis of public trust. Drawing on Victor Turner's concept of liminality, this study proposes "liminal homiletics" as a constructive interpretive framework for the contextual reception of the model in the Korean church. This concept reframes the transitions between pages not merely as logical progressions but as theological thresholds in which the congregation undergoes an existential turning — creating a distinctive homiletical space that, particularly in relation to the Korean sentiment of han (恨), allows the congregation to dwell sufficiently in suffering while remaining open to the arrival of grace. The study concludes that Wilson's Four Pages model remains a valuable homiletical resource today, and that it can be reappropriated as an integrative preaching framework connecting text, congregation, community, and society.

본 논문은 폴 스캇 윌슨(Paul Scott Wilson)의 『The Four Pages of the Sermon』 제1판(1999)과 제2판(2018)을 비교 분석함으로써, 네 장면 설교 모델의 구조적 전환, 신학적 심화, 실천적 확장의 양상을 고찰하고, 한국교회 목회 현장에 지니는 적용 가능성을 탐구하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 두 판본의 핵심 개념과 구성 원리를 정밀 대조하고, 각 장면의 기능과 역할, 장면 간 연결성, 문제와 은혜의 신학적 역동, 설교 언어와 수사학의 변화를 중심으로 근접 비교를 수행하였다. 분석 결과, 제2판은 제1판의 단순한 보완이 아니라 설교 준비 과정의 절차적 구체성을 강화하고, 장면 간 전환과 하나님 중심의 설교 언어를 정교화하며, 공동체적 실천과 공공적 책임의 차원을 확장한 것으로 나타났다. 특히 반전(inversion)과 전치(transposition)의 체계화, '하나님이 주어인 문장' 원리의 해석학적 심화, 경축(celebration)의 독립적 장르화는 제2판의 핵심적 변화로 평가된다. 이러한 변화는 제1판이 설교자 개인의 직관과 신학적 소양에 의존하던 구조를 절차적 방법론과 수사학적 전략을 통해 객관화하고, 설교의 공동체적·공적 차원을 통합적으로 확장한 것으로 이해될 수 있다. 또한 본 연구는 제2판의 변화가 한국교회의 삼대지 설교 전통과 상보적 관계를 이룰 수 있으며, 세대 간 갈등, 집단적 트라우마, 공적 신뢰의 위기 등 한국교회가 직면한 목회적 과제에 구체적으로 응답하는 설교 구조로 활용될 수 있음을 논증한다. 나아가 본 논문은 이러한 변화가 한국교회의 설교 현실 속에서 어떤 의미를 지니는지를 검토하고, 그 수용을 위한 보완 개념으로 빅터 터너의 리미널리티를 설교학적으로 차용한 '문턱의 설교학'을 제안한다. 이 관점은 장면 간 전환을 단순한 논리적 연결이 아니라 청중의 실존적 변환이 일어나는 신학적 문턱으로 읽게 함으로써, 특히 한국적 '한(恨)'의 정서와 관련하여 고통 앞에서 충분히 머무르면서도 은혜의 도래를 기대하게 하는 독특한 설교적 공간을 창출할 수 있다. 본 연구는 윌슨의 네 장면 설교 모델이 오늘날에도 유효한 설교학적 자산이며, 본문과 청중, 공동체와 사회를 연결하는 통합적 설교 프레임으로 재이해될 수 있음을 논증한다.
