This study aims to investigate the transformation of spatial composition in mortuary and funeral ceremony areas within funeral homes, from an architectural planning perspective, in response to changes in contemporary funeral culture in Korea. The study examines 13 funeral homes located in regional medical centers, categorized into three periods: the 1980s, 1990s, and post-2000s. Spatial configurations and area distributions were comparatively analyzed. Funeral ceremony halls have increasingly been planned as independent spaces, reflecting the growing emphasis on symbolic and ceremonial functions. While the overall size of funeral facilities has increased, the proportional area allocated to mortuary and ceremonial spaces has decreased. This trend indicates a shift from function-oriented layouts to user-oriented and service-enhanced environments. The study suggests that future funeral facility planning should integrate functional efficiency, ritual significance, and user experience, and provides foundational data for architectural design strategies in this field.

본 연구는 장례문화의 변화에 따른 장례식장의 안치 및 영결 공간구성의 변화 특성을 건축계획적 관점에서 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구 대상은 우리나라 지방의료원에 설치된 장례식장 13개소로, 건립 시기에 따라 1980년대, 1990년대, 2000년대 이후로 구분하여 공간구성 및 면적 특성을 비교 분석하였다. 영결식장은 최근 사례에서 독립된 공간으로 계획되는 비율이 증가하였으며, 이는 장례 의례의 상징성과 공간적 위상이 강화되고 있음을 의미한다. 또한 전체 장례식장의 규모는 증가하였으나 안치 및 영결 공간의 면적 비율은 상대적으로 감소하는 경향이 나타났다. 이는 장례시설이 기능 중심 공간에서 이용자 중심 및 서비스 중심 공간으로 확장되고 있음을 시사한다. 본 연구는 향후 장례식장 공간계획에 있어 기능성, 의례성, 이용자 경험을 통합적으로 고려할 필요성을 제시하며, 관련 설계의 기초자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.
