This study aims to analyze the spatial characteristics and transformation of incense-offering and reception areas in funeral homes, and to derive architectural planning implications. With the recent shift toward facility-based funeral culture, the roles of reception and visitor-related spaces have significantly expanded, emphasizing user experience and service quality. This study focuses on funeral homes located in regional medical centers and examines spatial composition, circulation systems, and area distribution across different construction periods. The results show that while the incense-offering space maintains its role as a central ritual space, reception areas have expanded and diversified in function. Reception spaces have evolved from simple waiting areas into multifunctional environments that accommodate dining, rest, and social interaction. Consequently, spatial independence and circulation separation have become increasingly important. Furthermore, although the overall size of funeral facilities has increased, the proportional area of incense-offering spaces has relatively decreased, while that of reception areas has increased. This indicates a shift from ritual-centered layouts to user-oriented spatial configurations.

본 연구는 장례식장의 분향 및 접객공간을 대상으로 공간구성 특성과 변화 양상을 분석하고, 건축계획적 시사점을 도출하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 최근 장례문화는 시설 중심으로 변화함과 동시에 조문객 응대와 유족의 체류 환경이 중요해지고 있으며, 이에 따라 분향 및 접객공간의 역할 또한 확대되고 있다. 연구 대상은 지방의료원 장례식장 사례를 중심으로 하였으며, 건립 시기별 공간구성, 동선체계, 면적 특성을 비교 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 분향공간은 의례적 중심 공간으로서 기능적 위상이 유지되는 반면, 접객공간은 점차 확대되고 기능이 다양화되는 경향이 나타났다. 특히 접객공간은 단순 대기 공간에서 식음, 휴식, 교류 기능을 포함하는 복합 공간으로 변화하고 있으며, 이에 따라 공간의 독립성과 동선 분리가 중요하게 나타났다. 또한 전체 면적 증가 대비 분향공간의 면적 비율은 상대적으로 감소하는 반면, 접객공간의 비중은 증가하는 경향이 확인되었다.
