This study aims to investigate the effects of chicken-raising activities in elementary schools on the core competencies—self-management, community, and aesthetic sensitivity—defined in the 2022 Revised Curriculum. The subjects were 35 fifth-grade students at an elementary school in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi-do, who participated in the entire process of raising chickens for five months. The findings are as follows: First, the chicken-raising activity significantly improved students' self-management competency, particularly in the areas of planning, persistence, and patience. This suggests that the practical task of caring for living beings strengthened students' self-control and willpower. Second, while quantitative changes in community competency were minimal, qualitative analysis revealed that social responsibility and sense of fellowship were internalized through collaboration and role-sharing. Third, the activity most significantly expanded aesthetic sensitivity, especially in terms of being moved by life and nature. The experience of witnessing the birth and growth of life served as a crucial catalyst for ecological sensitivity. In conclusion, life-based care activities like chicken-raising are valuable educational alternatives that integrally foster self-directedness and the value of coexistence. For future implementation, it is recommended to design long-term projects within the school curriculum and establish community cooperation networks.

본 연구는 초등학교에서 실시된 닭 기르기 활동이 2022 개정 교육과정의 핵심역량인 자기관리, 공동체, 심미적 감성 역량에 미치는 영향을 규명하고자 수행하였다. 연구 대상은 경기도 가평 소재 초등학교 5학년 학생 35명이며, 약 5개월간 계란의 부화부터 닭의 분양에 이르는 사육 전 과정을 창의적 체험 활동 및 교과 시간과 연계하여 운영하였다. 연구결과, 첫째, 자기관리 역량은 전체 평균이 통계적으로 유의미하게 향상되었으며, 특히, 끈기와 인내, 계획성 영역에서 뚜렷한 변화를 보였다. 이는 정해진 규칙에 따라 생명을 돌보는 활동이 학생들의 자기통제력과 실천적 의지를 강화했음을 시사한 결과이다. 둘째, 공동체 역량은 양적 수치상 유의미한 변화는 인정되지 않았지만, 질적 분석 결과 친구와의 협력 및 역할 분담 과정에서 사회적 책임감과 유대감이 실천적으로 내면화되었음이 확인되었다. 셋째, 심미적 감성 역량은 하위 요인 중 자연·생명 감동성 영역에서 가장 높은 향상을 보였다. 생명의 탄생과 성장을 직접 목격하는 경험이 정서적 풍요로움과 생태적 감수성을 자극하는 결정적인 계기가 되었다. 결론적으로 닭 기르기와 같은 생명 기반 돌봄 활동은 학생들의 자기 주도성과 공생의 가치를 통합적으로 길러주는 실천적인 교육 대안으로서 높은 가치를 지닌다는 것인 확인되었다. 향후, 이러한 활동의 교육적 안착을 위해 학교 중심의 장기 프로젝트와 지역사회 협력 네트워크 구축이 진행되어야 할 것이다.
