This paper aims to examine how the use of Eongan in the Korean language history unit/section of high school ‘Korean’ textbooks has changed in response to the change of curriculum from the 2007 revised curriculum to the 2022 revised curriculum. With the 2007 revised curriculum emphasizing the ‘history of Korean language life’ education, Eongan began to be actively used as the most suitable material to illustrate this. With the 2007 revised curriculum, using Eongan materials, changes in the orthography, phoneme, grammar, and words in the Medieval Korean and Modern Korean were actively and thoroughly taught, and changes in Korean language life, such as Hangeul education and the expansion of Hangeul use, were also covered. This trend continued, although somewhat reduced, in the 2012 revised curriculum. However, with the significant reduction in the scope of Korean language history education in the 2015 revised curriculum, the use of Eongan also decreased. The content of the education using Eongan was also simplified to finding differences compared to contemporary Korean rather than learning specific knowledge of Korean language history. This trend continues in the current 2022 revised curriculum. The Korean language history education using Eongan is extremely limited, and the content of the education is limited to exploring past Korean language life or the changes in communication methods due to changes in media. While Eongan can still be useful resource in the Korean language history education, it can also serve as a medium for broadening the scope of Korean language history education. There is ample potential for more active utilization of Eongan materials in reading, discourse, media, and writing education. Given their diverse educational value, continued efforts are needed to discover and introduce Eongan meterials for use in Korean language history education, and further, in the integrated education, and to explore specific educational strategies.

본고는 2007 개정 교육과정부터 현행 2022 개정 교육과정에 이르기까지 국어사 교육의 성취기준이 변화함에 따라 고등학교 <국어> 교과서의 국어사 단원 내에서 언간 활용 양상이 어떻게 달라졌는지 살펴보았다. 2007 개정 국어과 교육과정에서 ‘국어생활사’를 강조하면서 이를 효과적으로 교육할 수 있는 자료로 언간이 본격적으로 활용되기 시작하였고, 언간을 토대로 중세국어와 근대국어의 표기법, 음운, 문법, 어휘의 변화는 물론, 한글 교육과 한글 사용의 확대 같은 국어 생활의 변화도 상세히 다루었다. 2012 개정 교육과정에서도 다소 축소되기는 하였으나 이러한 교육 양상이 지속되었다. 그런데 2015 개정 교육과정에서 국어사 교육의 범위가 축소되면서 국어사 교육에서 언간을 활용한 사례도 대폭 줄고 이를 통한 교육의 내용도 구체적인 국어사 지식을 학습하기보다 현대국어와 비교하여 차이점을 찾는 정도로 단순화하였다. 이러한 경향은 현행 2022 개정 교육과정에서도 이어져 언간을 활용한 국어사 교육 자체가 극히 제한되어 교육 내용은 당대의 국어 생활, 매체의 변화에 따른 소통 방식의 변화 탐구 정도로 축소된 상황이다. 그러나 언간은 국어사 교육에서 여전히 유용한 자료이며, 더 나아가 더 넓은 국어 교육 및 융합 교육의 차원에서 언간을 활용할 수 있는 가능성이 크므로 더 적극적인 자료의 발굴 및 소개, 교육 방안 모색이 필요하다.
