This paper proposes a pedagogical approach to Korean language history education that meets the “achievement standards of the 2022 Revised National Curriculum”, drawing on the fact that the vernacular translations (eonhae) of Sohak (『小學』) serve both as primary sources for the history of the Korean language and as historically significant socio-cultural documents. The publication history of the Sohak Eonhae editions and its parallel with the political conflicts spanning from the mid- to late Joseon period are employed as an introductory hook to engage students, who then compare the editions to identify and reason about the differences that the circumstances of publication left on each text. The emphasis is placed on helping students understand that the language of the past, like that of the present, was a living language intertwined with human life, society, and culture. Furthermore, in order to sustain the learning motivation thus generated, the approach incorporates instruction in aspects of Korean language history that deepen students’ understanding of Modern Korean, thereby demonstrating the practical value of studying language history. The design of this pedagogical approach is grounded in narrative-based learning, schema theory, and the catch-and-hold model of situational interest, among other frameworks in educational and cognitive psychology.

본고에서는 『小學』의 언해본들이 국어사 자료임과 동시에 사회․문화적으로 중요한 역사적 자료라는 점에 착안하여 [2022 개정 교육과정]의 성취 기준에 부합하는 교육 방안을 제시하였다. 본고에서 제안한 교육 방안은 『小學』의 언해본들의 간행 경위와 조선 중기에서 후기로 이어지는 정치 대립의 평행성을 수업의 도입으로 삼아 학생들을 유인하고, 각 언해본의 비교를 통해 간행 배경이 텍스트에 남긴 차이를 추론하고 이해하게 하는 것을 골자로 한다. 이를 통해 과거의 언어도 지금의 언어와 같이 사회ㆍ문화 등 인간의 삶과 관련이 있는 살아 있는 언어라는 사실을 교육하는 데 중점을 두었다. 나아가, 유인된 학습자들의 학습 동기를 유지하기 위해 현대 국어의 심화 이해를 위해 필요한 국어사 지식을 학습시킴으로써 국어사 학습의 효용성을 보여주는 방안을 제안하였다. 이러한 교육 방안의 설계는 서사 기반 학습, 스키마 이론, 상황적 흥미의 유인-유지 모델 등 교육심리학적ㆍ인지심리학적 근거에 기반하고 있다.
