This study explores how the patterns of change from Middle Korean to Early Modern Korean can be effectively taught through Haengsildo-type texts, a group of moral exemplars repeatedly published during the Joseon period, based on the educational value of linguistic change in Korean language education. Recent discussions on the teaching of the history of the Korean language have emphasized that the goal of such instruction should not be limited to knowing the results of language change, but should enable students to explain the processes and mechanisms underlying those changes. Accordingly, the teaching of Korean language history in school education should not be reduced to memorizing lists of historical linguistic outcomes; rather, it should encourage students’ curiosity and inquiry about those linguistic phenomena. In this context, this study proposes several concrete and innovative pedagogical approaches for teaching various patterns of linguistic change in Korean by utilizing shared narratives found in Haengsildo-type texts that reflect the state of the Korean language in the fifteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

본고는 국어의 변화가 지닌 국어교육적 가치를 바탕으로 조선 시대 여러 차례 간행된 행실도류 문헌들을 통해 중세국어에서 근대국어로의 변화 양상을 어떻게 교육하면 좋을지 논의해 보고자 했다. 최근의 국어사 교육 논의들은 국어사 교육의 목표를 단순히 언어 변화의 결과를 아는 것이 아닌, 변화의 과정과 그 메커니즘을 설명할 수 있도록 하는 데 두고 있다. 따라서 학교 교육에서 국어사 교육은 국어의 역사적 산물들의 목록을 암기하는 일이 아니라 그러한 산물들에 학생들의 호기심과 탐구심이 발동하도록 하는 일이 되어야 한다. 이런 맥락에서 본고에서는 15, 17, 18세기 국어의 모습이 담긴 행실도류 속의 공통된 이야기들을 활용해 국어의 다양한 언어 변화 양상을 교육할 수 있는 구체적이고 새로운 방법론들을 제안하고자 했다.
