Forest resources are recognized as vital for biodiversity conservation, tourism, recreation, forest kindergarten, forest interpretation, forest healing, and forest education. Jogyesan, located in Suncheon, Jeollanam-do, provides visitors with easy access to temple forests and the cultural and historical sites of temples, providing opportunities for various experiences. Songgwangsa Temple in 2021 and Sunamsa Temple and National Suncheon University in 2022 signed a memorandum of understanding to designate Jogyesan as a university academic forest. With this signing, Suncheon National University is using it as a diverse educational and practice area for students and as a research activity space for faculty. In Jogyesan, there are Ssanghyangsu(Pair of Junipers) of Cheonjaam Hermitage of Songgwangsa Temple, which is currently designated as a natural monument, and Seonammae of Seonamsa Temple, and the Lee Pop Tree of Songgwangsa Temple was canceled. The Ssanghyangsu(Pair of Junipers) of Cheonjaam Hermitage in Songgwangsa Temple (Cobel Tree, Natural Monument No. 88) has received a lot of attention worldwide due to its 900-year-old age and unique shape. Academia has mainly dealt with the re-designation of Natural Monument No. 88 by the Korean government in 1962, but this study aims to reveal the historical background of Ssanghyangsu(Pair of Junipers) through official records that it has already been designated as a natural monument by the Japanese Government-General of Japanese colonial era and has received legal protection, and to compare and analyze the investigation and management process of Ssanghyangsu(Pair of Junipers) with the results of the recent research team.

산림자원은 생물다양성 보전 및 관광, 휴양 및 숲유치원, 숲해설, 산림 치유 등 그리고 산림교육을 위한 귀중한 자원으로 인정받고 있다. 전라남도 순천에 자리잡고 있는 조계산은 방문객들이 사찰 숲과 사찰의 문화와 역사의 현장에 쉽게 접근할 수 있어 다양한체험을 할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다. 국립순천대학교는 조계산을 대학 학술림으로 지정하기 위해 2021년 송광사 그리고2022년 선암사와 양해각서 체결을 하였다. 이 체결로 국립순천대학교에서는 학생들의다양한 교육 및 실습장으로 그리고 교수진의 연구 활동 공간으로 활용하고 있다. 조계산에는 현재 천연기념물로 지정되어 있는 송광사 천자암의 쌍향수와 선암사의선암매가 있으며 송광사의 이팝나무는 고사되어 지정 해제되었다. 송광사 천자암의 쌍향수(곱향나무1), 천연기념물 제88호)2)는 독특한 형태미와 약 900년을 장수한 수령으로 인해 세계적으로 많은 주목을 받아왔다. 학계에서는 주로 1962년 대한민국 정부에 의한 천연기념물 제88호 재지정 사실만을다루어 왔으나, 본 연구는 일제강점기 조선총독부에 의해 쌍향수가 이미 천연기념물로지정되어 법적 보호를 받았음을 공식 기록을 통해 그 역사적 배경을 밝히고 그동안 쌍향수에 대한 조사 및 관리 과정과 최근 연구진이 조사한 결과를 비교 분석하는데 목적이 있다.
