This study examines the cognitive structure and shifting perspectives on tradition and modernity of Seokjeon Hwang Won(黃瑗, 1870–1944), a local Confucian intellectual based in Gurye, Jeolla-do, during Korea’s transitional period to modernity. As the younger brother and disciple of the renowned scholar-patriot Maecheon Hwang Hyeon (黃玹), Hwang Won inherited his brother’s intellectual rigor while documenting the turbulent reality of post-Donghak Peasant Revolution society and the gradual loss of national sovereignty. While previous scholarship has often analyzed Confucian intellectuals of this era through the rigid dichotomy of Wijeongcheoksa (Defending Orthodoxy and Rejecting Heterodoxy) and Gaehwa (Enlightenment), Hwang’s records reveal a complex framework of thought that cannot be reduced to such binary schemas. The research conducts a textual analysis of four major works authored between 1899 and 1910: Bokhogo(覆壺稿), Poseollok(捕虱錄), Illok(日 錄), and Goamgimunrok(古巖記聞錄). The findings show that while Hwang firmly maintained the virtues of a traditional Confucian scholar, he exhibited a flexible intellectual disposition by extensively engaging with Silhak (Practical Learning) and Sinseo (New Western-style Books). He sought social restoration through Confucian ethics such as loyalty, filial piety, and chastity, while simultaneously recognizing Western civilization and international shifts as pragmatic survival strategies. Hwang’s perspective does not represent a linear transition from tradition to modernity; instead, it manifests as a multilayered structure where the preservation of Confucian values coexists with the selective adoption of modern elements. For Hwang, modernity was not a new order replacing tradition, but a practical response to ensure national survival. This study underscores the necessity for a more multidimensional understanding of the intellectual landscape and localized responses of provincial Confucian scholars during Korea’s transitional period.
