Architectural Characteristics of the Jabangu Pavilion at Okcheonsa Temple and the Construction Activities of Monk-Soldiers in Gyeongsang Province
This study aims to investigate the architectural characteristics of the Jabangu Pavilion at Okcheonsa Temple and the construction activities of monk-soldiers in the Gyeongsang region, with a particular focus on the relationship between temple architecture and organized labor in the late Joseon period. To achieve this, the reconstruction history and spatial layout of Okcheonsa Temple were analyzed, and the architectural status of Jabangu Pavilion was examined through a comparative study of temple pavilions in Gyeongsangnam-do. The findings indicate that the temple complex forms a four-tiered courtyard layout adapted to mountainous terrain, and that Jabangu Pavilion functions as the final gate structure leading into the central precinct, thereby completing the spatial hierarchy of the temple. Architecturally, Jabangu Pavilion exhibits a distinctive form in that it is a single-story structure that simultaneously performs the function of a main gate. Its seven-bay façade, along with its elaborate bracket systems and decorative elements, distinguishes it from other temple pavilions in the region. In addition, this study demonstrates that monk-soldiers played a crucial role in temple reconstruction processes after the 17th century, forming extensive construction networks centered on leading monk-artisans such as Wolwon. The record of approximately 300 workers involved in the construction of Jabangu Pavilion suggests the participation of an organized monk-soldier group, and historical evidence indicates that Okcheonsa maintained a large-scale monk-soldier organization of around 300 members in the mid-18th century. In conclusion, Jabangu Pavilion can be understood not merely as a temple pavilion, but as a material outcome of the integration between architectural practice and monk-soldier organization in the late Joseon period. This study proposes a more integrated analytical framework that connects architectural form with human organization in the study of Korean Buddhist architecture.
