This study examines the concept of ‘authenticity’, a term frequently discussed in recent discourse on acting, with the aim of identifying trends in contemporary acting and elucidating its significance. Rather than presuming authenticity to be the actor’s inner truth, this study investigates how authenticity is constructed and expressed through the act of acting, and what is emphasized or excluded in that process. Furthermore, in order to clarify what ‘authenticity’ signifies and under what conditions it is established, this study situates the concept within the broader field of the arts and analyzes it primarily through Diderot’s Paradox of Acting and Rameau’s Nephew. These texts prompt reflection on the conditions under which authenticity functions not as an inner reality but as a constructed effect— emerging through tensions between emotion and technique, the inner and the outer, and the bare face and the mask. Through this analysis, it is argued that ‘authenticity’ is produced through interactions that occur in the ‘space of appearance’, mediated by the ‘public mask’. It may be understood not as the transmission of an actor’s or a character’s inner psychological states, but as a sense of reality that emerges from the tension between the ‘public mask’ and the ‘space of appearance’. In this context, the ‘space of appearance’ refers to ‘a space in which who I am is revealed through the presence of the Other’. Consequently, this study proposes that, in contemporary acting, ‘authenticity’ should be understood as a performative event that occurs within a relational space shaped by interaction with the audience and the formation of public relations. This study ultimately aims to move beyond value-based interpretations of authenticity and to provide an analytical framework for understanding its operational logic and political function in contemporary performance. In future research, in order to overcome the limitation of this study being centered primarily on literature review, case studies will be conducted based on the concept and operational principles of authenticity established in this study, with the aim of exploring more concretely the actual ways in which authenticity operates in contemporary acting.

이 연구는 최근 연기 담론에서 빈번하게 회자되는 ‘진정성’에 대해 고찰하여 동시대 연기의 흐름을 파악하고 그 의미를 밝히는 데 있다. 그러므로 본 연구에서는 진정성을 배우의 내적 진실로 전제하기보다, 연기 행위가 진정성을 어떻게 구성하고 표현하는지, 그 구성 과정에서 무엇이 배제되고 강조되는지를 연구하였다. 또한 ‘진정성’이 무엇을 의미하며 어떤 조건에서 성립하는지를 규명하기 위해, 진정성 개념을 예술 일반의 맥락에서 정리하고 디드로의 『배우에 관한 역설』과 『라모의 조카』를 중심으로 분석하였다. 이 자료는 감정과 기술, 내면과 외면, 맨얼굴과 가면의 긴장을 통해 진정성이 내면의 실재가 아니라 구성된 효과로 작동하는 조건을 사유하게 하므로 이를 통해 동시대 진정성 연기의 실제를 규명하기에 유용하였다. 그 과정에서 ‘진정성’은 공적 가면을 매개로, 현상의 공간에서 연기를 수행하면서 형성되는 상호작용을 통해 산출된다는 것을 확인하였다. 자기 자신이나 역할의 심리적 정념의 전달이 아닌, 공적 가면과 현상의 공간 사이의 긴장에서 표출되는 실재감이라고 할 수 있다. 이는 자기-동일성을 전제로 구성되는 뉴다큐멘터리 연극과 같은 형식에도 동일하게 적용된다. 자기 자신을 재현하는 공적 가면을 쓰고 무대라는 현상의 공간에서 연기를 통해 관객과 상호 작용함으로써 진정성을 산출한다는 흐름에 부합되기 때문이다. 이때 현상의 공간이란 ‘내가 누구인지 타자에 의해 드러나는 공간’이다. 결과적으로 이 연구는 동시대 연기에서 진정성이 수용자와의 상호작용, 그리고 공적 관계 맺기가 이루어지는 공간에서 발생하는 수행적 사건임을 제시하였다. 이는 정치적이고 윤리적인 문제를 포함한다. 이 같은 결론은 진정성 담론을 가치 판단의 언어로 반복하는데서 나아가, 동시대 연기가 작동하는 방식과 그 정치적 기능을 규명하기 위한 분석틀을 제공할 것으로 기대한다. 향후, 문헌연구 중심이라는 이 연구의 한계를 넘어서기 위해 진정성의 개념과 작동 원리를 바탕으로 사례연구를 수행하여, 동시대 연기에서 진정성이 작동하는 실제 양상을 보다 구체적으로 탐구하고자 한다.
