This study examines the perception of time in Yeolha Diary(熱河日記) by Park Ji-won(Yeonam) and investigates its intrinsic correlation with the concrete writing strategies through which it is embodied. The traditional East Asian temporal paradigm of gwigocheongeum(貴古賤今) idealized the sage age of ancient China while construing the present as a process of decline. Yeonam, however, rejects such a hierarchical conception of time and instead embraces the principle of immediacy (jeuksa, 卽事), in which truth emerges from the lived reality of the here and now. For him, time is not a fixed substance but a continually shifting and relative process, and this temporal consciousness is inscribed into the formal structures and narrative modes of his writing, materializing as a distinctive compositional strategy. The primary texts analyzed are Ilsin Supilseo(馹迅隨筆序) and Yachul Gobukgugi(夜出古北口記). In Ilsin Supilseo, Yeonam reduces the 240-year historical span of Confucius’s Spring and Autumn Annals to the brief moment of a flower blooming and falling, thereby dismantling the absolute authority of historical time. At the same time, by asserting that even the instant of dipping a brush into ink contains both past and present, he radically relativizes temporality. Furthermore, through the episode of Sangwonam Hermitage on Mt. Myohyang, he sensuously demonstrates that the same moment may be experienced as entirely different qualitative times depending on spatial elevation, thereby revealing the experiential relativity of time. In Yachul Gobukgugi, Yeonam renders the moment before the wall of Gobuk Pass through a language of double negation, shaping it as a singular, unrepeatable “now” that eludes capture within conventional temporal categories. Moreover, through vivid metaphors—moonlight as a blade, the sound of water as gongs and drums, and mountain peaks as spears and shields—he overlays historical memory and present experience within a single scene, fusing temporal layers into one perceptual field. Although the two texts employ different modes of presentification, they converge in allowing scenes to speak for themselves rather than directly articulating abstract ideas. Yeonam’s temporal consciousness and his writing strategy are not discrete elements but two interwoven dimensions of the single principle of immediacy (jeuksa). This strategy transforms traditional prose, once dependent upon the authority of the past, into a living record of experience, and therein lies its enduring significance as a foundation for modern narrativity.

본고는 연암 박지원의 『熱河日記』에 나타난 시간 인식과 그것이 구체적인 글쓰기 전략으로 형상화되는 상관성을 살핀 것이다. 중세 동아시아의 전통적 시간관인 貴古賤今은 고대 중국의 성인 시대를 이상화하고 현재를 퇴보의 과정으로 여겼으나, 연암은 이러한 위계적 시간관을 거부하고 지금 이곳의 현장에서 진실이 발현된다는 卽事의 정신을 지녔다. 연암에게 시간은 고정된 실체가 아니라 끊임없이 변화하는 상대적 과정이며, 이 시간 의식이 작품의 형식과 서술 방식 속에 담겨 독자적인 쓰기 전략으로 구현된다는 것이 핵심 논지이다. 분석 대상은 〈馹迅隨筆序〉와 〈夜出古北口記〉이다. 〈일신수필서〉에서 연암은 공자의 『춘추』 240년이라는 역사적 시간을 꽃 한 송이가 피고 지는 일로 환원하는 한편, 먹 한 점을 찍는 찰나에도 古今이 담겨 있다고 하여 역사적 시간의 절대적 권위를 해체하였다. 또한 묘향산 상원암 일화를 통해 공간의 높낮이에 따라 같은 시각이 전혀 다른 질적 시간으로 체험될 수 있음을 감각적으로 보여주었다. 〈야출고북구기〉에서는 고북구 성벽 앞의 순간을 이중부정의 언어로 표현함으로써 그 순간이 관습적인 시간 범주로는 포획되지 않는 ‘오직 지금’의 일회적 순간임을 형상화하였다. 나아가 달빛과 강물 소리, 봉우리를 각각 칼날․징과 북소리․창과 방패로 비유하는 묘사를 통해 역사적 사건과 현재의 체험을 하나의 장면 안에 중첩시켰다. 두 작품은 각각 다른 방식으로 현재화 전략을 구사하지만, 관념적 주제를 직접 서술하는 대신 장면이 스스로 말하게 한다는 점에서 공통된다. 연암의 시간 의식과 쓰기 전략은 별개가 아니라 즉사라는 하나의 원리의 서로 다른 두 층위이다. 이 전략은 과거의 권위에 의존하던 전통 산문을 생동하는 삶의 기록으로 탈바꿈시켰으며, 현대적 서사성을 확보하고 있다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다.
