This study aims to identify the nature of the “medial hybridity” of Gangnyeong Talchum by analyzing the characterization, dialogue, and inserted songs within its script from the perspectives of “remediation” and “intermediality.” Moving beyond the conventional view that treats mask dance as a fixed folk heritage or a singular genre, this paper defines Gangnyeong Talchum as a dynamic “media platform” that has actively accepted and transformed existing artistic resources through constant negotiation with adjacent art media of the time. First, this study traces the historical trajectory through which Gangnyeong Talchum formed its hybrid foundation, focusing on the migration of professional entertainer groups following the dissolution of the Naryedogam and the influx of external cultural resources such as the Girin-jojong-seol. Based on this medial groundwork, the actual reconstruction of the text is analyzed at two distinct levels. In the first level, the process of narrative remediation is examined through the reception of the classical novel Kuunmong (The Nine Cloud Dream). This study reveals that the performers of Gangnyeong Talchum fragmented and extracted only the specific moment of “the fall of Seong-jin”—his awakening to worldly desires—and optimized it for the dramatic context of the mask dance, thereby creating new medial value. In the second level, the intermedial transformation of inserted songs is investigated to clarify the method of combining heterogeneous media resources. This study categorizes the ways in which external texts—such as Pansori, Japga, and Shamanic songs—are reconstructed within the interface of the mask dance. In particular, the “intermedial subversion” that occurs when the ruling Yangban class sings in the language of the lower class, such as Gakseori-taryeong, serves as a key mechanism for satirizing the contradictions of the caste system. In conclusion, the hybridity of Gangnyeong Talchum is not a simple mixture but a strategic choice to compensate for narrative gaps and enhance performance vitality. By redefining the mask dance as an intertextual medium rather than a fossilized tradition, this study provides a theoretical basis for comparative media studies across the field of Korean traditional performing arts.

본 연구는 강령탈춤을 고정된 전통의 유산에서 벗어나, 인접 매체와 끊임없이 교섭하며 자기를 갱신해 온 매체 플랫폼으로 재정의하고 그 복합적 구성을 규명하는 데 목적을 두었다. 본고는 볼터와 그루신의 재매개 이론과 상호매체성 논의를 분석틀로 삼아 강령탈춤의 텍스트가 지닌 매체적 정체성을 고찰하였다. 먼저 나례도감 해산 이후 전문 예인 집단의 이동과 기린조종설 등 외부 자원의 유입 과정을 통해 강령탈춤이 복합적 기반을 형성하게 된 역사적 경로를 추적하였다. 다음으로 이러한 매체적 토대 위에서 실제 텍스트가 어떻게 재구성되었는지 두 가지 층위로 분석하였다. 첫째, 고전소설 <구운몽>의 수용 양상을 통해 서사적 재매개 과정을 살폈다. 탈춤의 연행 주체들은 방대한 소설의 서사 중 ‘성진의 파계’라는 특정 국면만을 파편적으로 추출하여 탈춤의 극적 맥락에 최적화함으로써 새로운 매체적 가치를 창출하였음을 밝혔다. 둘째, 삽입가요의 상호매체적 변용을 통해 이질적 매체 자원의 결합 방식을 규명하였다. 판소리, 잡가, 무가 등의 외부 텍스트가 탈춤의 인터페이스 안에서 재구성되는 양상을 세 가지 유형으로 분류하였으며, 특히 양반이 하층민의 언어를 가창하는 상호매체적 전복이 신분제 풍자의 핵심 기제로 작동함을 증명하였다. 이러한 분석은 강령탈춤의 복합적 매체성이 단순한 혼합이 아니라, 서사 보완과 연희성 강화를 위한 전략적 선택이었음을 방증한다. 본 연구는 탈춤을 박제된 전통이 아닌 상호텍스트적 매체로 재정립함으로써, 향후 전통연희 전반에 대한 매체론적 비교 연구의 토대를 마련하였다는 데 의의가 있다.
