The Formation of Situated Knowledge through the Farming Experiences of Women Farmers — Focusing on the oral life history of women farmers in Haman, Gyeongnam
This study begins with the recognition that, despite the accumulated farming experience of older female farmers through seed storage and transmission, small-scale garden farming, and judgment and practice based on bodily sensations, they have been marginalized in both the modern agricultural knowledge system and alternative agricultural discourse. Amid the “local extinction” and the deepening crisis in rural communities, the experiences of female farmers are often cited as examples of tradition or alternatives. However, the question of the conditions under which such experiences were formed and transmitted has not been sufficiently addressed. In response to this qustion, the study draws on oral history interviews conducted with elderly women farmers who have spent their lives engaged in farming in Haman, South Korea. It explores how they make sense of their farming experiences, selectively construct memories, and position themselves as subjects, while also examining the strategies for sustainable life–production that they envision under contemporary conditions. To achieve this, this study analyzed the participants' life histories using Dona J. Haraway's concept of "situated knowledge" as a theoretical framework. In particular, the participants' life histories revealed that the practices of production and distribution mediated by kitchen-garden-based communities repositioned women farmers as economic actors, while simultaneously reconfiguring the relationships between people, crops, and seeds. These practices can be read in relation to Haraway’s notion of becoming-with, revealing that community is not an idealised ethical value but is performatively constituted through repetitive labour and practices of care. In this context, this study repositions the farming experiences of older women farmers not as a fading past, but as critical knowledge that can reconstruct sustainable living and production in the present, providing an epistemological foundation for imagining a different future for the community.
