The Effects of Interactivity on Viewing Satisfaction in Online Theatrical Performances : Conditional Indirect Effects of Flow by Streaming Mode
This study examines the effect of perceived interactivity on viewing satisfaction in the context of online theatrical performances, focusing on the mediating role of flow and on how this indirect effect varies across streaming modes. Unlike previous studies on online performances, which have mainly focused on K-pop-centered online concerts, this study highlights theater as a genre that requires a high degree of narrative concentration and psychological identification. In particular, it explores both theoretically and empirically the possibility that real-time communication may have contradictory effects on audience flow in theatrical viewing contexts. To test these relationships, a survey was conducted with 302 viewers of online theatrical performances in Korea, and moderated mediation analysis was performed using PROCESS Macro Model 7. The results indicate that interactivity has a positive direct effect on viewing satisfaction. However, the indirect effect via flow differs by streaming mode. In VOD performances, interactivity enhances flow and increases viewing satisfaction, reflecting complementary mediation. In contrast, in live-streamed performances, interactivity reduces flow and negatively affects satisfaction, indicating competitive mediation. These findings suggest that interactivity should be understood as a context-dependent design element rather than a uniformly beneficial feature in online theatrical performances. The study contributes to the literature by integrating media richness and cognitive load perspectives to explain the conditional effects of interactivity on audience experience. The study contributes theoretically by integrating media richness and cognitive load perspectives to explain the context-dependent effects of interactivity, and offers practical implications for designing interaction features that optimize flow in online theatrical productions.
