A Study on the Effect of Mixed Training of Classical and Popular Vocalization on Vocal Efficacy through Metacognitive Vocalization
This study aimed to empirically examine the effects of learners’ perceptions of mixed vocal training (integrating classical and popular vocal techniques) on vocal self-efficacy, and to investigate the mediating role of metacognitive vocal regulation ability in this relationship. As boundaries between musical genres have become increasingly blurred in contemporary vocal education, mixed vocal training that combines the systematic foundations of classical vocal technique with the expressive and stylistic flexibility of popular vocal technique has gained growing attention. Despite its practical importance, however, limited empirical research has explored how such training influences learners’ psychological and cognitive outcomes. Addressing this gap, the present study conceptualized mixed vocal training not merely as a technical combination of vocal methods but as a self-regulated learning process and analyzed its effects from a metacognitive perspective. A survey was conducted with university students majoring in classical music, and perception of mixed vocal training, metacognitive vocal regulation ability, and vocal self-efficacy were selected as the main variables. Gender, academic level, length of major-related training, and weekly vocal practice time were included as control variables. Data were analyzed using SPSS and PROCESS Macro (Model 4) to test the mediating effect. The results showed that perception of mixed vocal training had a significant positive effect on metacognitive vocal regulation ability, indicating that more positive perceptions of mixed vocal training enhance learners’ ability to monitor, evaluate, and regulate their vocal production. In addition, perception of mixed vocal training exerted a direct positive effect on vocal self-efficacy, while metacognitive vocal regulation ability was also found to be a significant predictor of vocal self-efficacy. Furthermore, metacognitive vocal regulation ability partially mediated the relationship between perception of mixed vocal training and vocal self-efficacy, demonstrating that the effects of mixed vocal training are strengthened and extended through learners’ metacognitive regulatory processes.
