This study seeks to understand the decoration of early Joseon Buncheong ware not merely as a collection of surface patterns or technical techniques, but as a ‘decorative language’ that shapes visual order and cultural meaning. To this end, it first examines the background to the emergence of Buncheong ware, focusing on the transition from Goryeo celadon to Buncheong ware, socio-cultural changes in the early Joseon period, and the shift in the concept of decoration. Subsequently, focusing on the representative decorative techniques of Buncheong ware stamp printing, inlay, and iron-glaze painting the study analysed how each technique organises the surface and constructs visual expression. Stamp decoration creates a sense of order and rhythm through repetition and arrangement, whilst inlay decoration highlights forms and draws visual focus through the contrast between patterns and background. Furthermore, iron-painted decoration reveals a freer and more painterly expressiveness through the dynamism and spontaneity of its brushstrokes. Although these decorative techniques are based on different expressive principles, they share the common function of transforming the surface of Buncheong ware into a meaningful visual field. Furthermore, this paper demonstrates that the decorative language of Buncheong ware materially visualises the aesthetic sensibility and cultural sensibilities unique to the early Joseon period through simplicity, restrained ornamentation, asymmetry, naturalness, everydayness and freedom of expression. Furthermore, through comparison with Goryeo celadon and related Chinese ceramics, it has been confirmed that the uniqueness of buncheong ware lies not in the origins of individual patterns or specific techniques, but in the compositional principles of a visual language that reorganises and reconstructs them within the sensibilities of the Early Joseon period. Ultimately, buncheong ware can be understood not merely as a transitional ceramic style, but as a distinct cultural form that reveals the sensory structure and aesthetic attitude of Early Joseon visual culture.

본 연구는 조선 전기 분청사기의 장식을 단순한 표면 문양이나 기술적 기법의 집합으로 보지 않고, 시각적 질서와 문화적 의미를 형성하는 ‘장식언어’로 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 분청사기의 형성 배경을 고려청자에서 분청사기로의 전환, 조선 전기 사회문화적 변화, 그리고 장식 개념의 이동이라는 측면에서 검토하였다. 이어서 분청사기를 대표하는 장식기법인 인화·박지·철화를 중심으로, 각각의 기법이 어떠한 방식으로 기면을 조직하고 시각적 표현을 구성하는지를 분석하였다. 인화 장식은 반복과 배열을 통해 질서감과 리듬을 형성하며, 박지 장식은 문양과 배경의 대비를 통해 형태를 부각시키고 시각적 집중을 유도한다. 또한 철화 장식은 필선의 운동성과 즉흥성을 통해 보다 자유롭고 회화적인 표현성을 드러낸다. 이들 장식기법은 서로 다른 표현 원리를 바탕으로 하면서도, 공통적으로 분청사기의 표면을 의미 있는 시각적 장으로 전환시키는 역할을 수행한다. 나아가 본 연구는 분청사기의 장식언어가 소박성, 절제된 장식성, 비대칭성, 자연스러움, 일상성, 표현의 자유를 통해 조선 전기 특유의 미의식과 문화감각을 물질적으로 가시화하고 있음을 밝혔다. 또한 고려청자 및 중국 관련 도자와의 비교를 통해, 분청사기의 독자성은 개별 문양이나 특정 기법의 기원 자체보다 그것을 조선 전기적 감각 속에서 새롭게 조직하고 재구성한 시각언어의 구성 원리에 있음을 확인하였다. 결국 분청사기는 단순한 과도기적 도자 양식이 아니라, 조선 전기 시각문화의 감각 구조와 미적 태도를 드러내는 독자적 문화 형식으로 이해될 수 있다.
