This study investigates the conversion theology of Jonathan Edwards, aiming to clarify how he defined and interpreted true conversion within his broader theological framework. Drawing from his pastoral observations during major revival movements, Edwards critically distinguished genuine conversion from various religious phenomena often mistaken for it—such as emotional intensity, intellectual insight, conviction of sin, or external moral reform. These distinctions are most clearly articulated in his Religious Affections, where he argues that none of these elements, in themselves, constitute true spiritual transformation. This paper first examines experiences that may appear among the unconverted and then analyzes the role of conviction of sin as a potential precursor to conversion. It further explores the integrated relationship between conversion, regeneration, and repentance in Edwards’s theology, and finally considers the fruits of true conversion as evidence of a renewed nature produced by the Holy Spirit. The study concludes that Edwards locates the essence of conversion not in transient experiences but in the profound reorientation of the soul’s disposition wrought by divine grace. Such an understanding provides valuable theological insight for discerning authentic Christian conversion in contemporary contexts.

본 논문은 Jonathan Edwards의 회심론을 면밀히 분석하여, 그가 참된 회심을 어떻게 규정하고 이해하는지를 신학적으로 규명한다. 에드워즈는 부흥운동의 중심에서 다양한 종교적 반응을 관찰한 경험을 바탕으로, 감정의 격동과 지적 이해, 죄의 자각, 외적 행위 변화 등 회심으로 오인될수 있는 현상들을 비판적으로 구분하였다. 이는 『신앙감정론』에서 가장 분명하게 드러나며, 그는 이러한 요소들이 참된 회심의 본질적 증거가 될 수 없다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 먼저 회심하지 않은 자들에게서도 나타날 수 있는 종교적 현상들을 검토한 후, 회심의 선행 조건으로서 죄에 대한 깨달음의 역할을 분석한다. 이어서 에드워즈가 이해한 회심·중생·회개의 통합적 구조를 고찰하며, 마지막으로 참된 회심이 맺는 열매를 제시함으로써 그의 회심론이 지닌 신학적 일관성과 목회적 의의를 밝힌다. 본 논문은 에드워즈의 회심론이 단순한 심리적 변화가 아니라 성령에 의해 근본적 성향이 새롭게 되는 내적 변화를 중심에 둔다고 결론짓는다. 이러한 분석은 오늘날 회심이해의 혼란을 바로잡고, 참된 회심의 본질을 분별하는 데 중요한 신학적 지침을 제공한다.
