This study explores the significance of cultural keywords in reading the New Testament, focusing on the work of David A. deSilva. When biblical texts are interpreted apart from their historical and cultural contexts, readers risk distorting their meaning through the lens of modern cultural assumptions. Accordingly, this paper seeks to guide contemporary readers into the cultural world of first-century Mediterranean society, enabling a more accurate hearing of the New Testament as it was originally intended. The study highlights four major cultural components emphasized by deSilva—honor and shame, patronage and reciprocity, kinship, and purity—and examines how these elements shaped both the writing and reception of New Testament texts. The first part (chapters 1, 3, 5, and 7) surveys the cultural environment of early Christianity through Greco-Roman literature, Hellenistic and Roman social structures, and Jewish religious texts. The second part (chapters 2, 4, 6, and 8) analyzes how these cultural patterns appear within specific New Testament passages. By situating biblical texts within the cultural matrix of the ancient Mediterranean world, this study proposes a hermeneutical approach that enables readers to hear the New Testament in its original register. Such an interpretive framework deepens contemporary understanding by illuminating the lived experience, values, and tensions of the earliest Christian communities.

본 논문은 David A. deSilva의 저작을 중심으로 하여, 신약 성경을 이해하는 데 있어 문화적 키워드의 역할을 탐구한다. 성경 해석에서 본문의 역사적‧문화적 배경을 고려하지 않을 경우, 독자는 자신의 문화적 규범과 가치에 의해 본문의 의미를 왜곡할 위험이 있다. 이에 본 연구는 신약 저자와 초기 청중이 처한 1세기 지중해 세계의 문화적 컨텍스트로 독자를 이끌어, 본문이 의도한 의미를 보다 정확하게 듣도록 돕는 것을 목적으로 한다. 특히 deSilva가 강조한 네 가지 핵심 문화 요소—명예/수치(honor/shame), 후원/호혜 (patronage/reciprocity), 친족 관계(kinship), 정결(purity)—가 신약 본문에 어떻게 반영되어 있는지를 살펴본다. 연구 구성은 두 부분으로 나뉘며, 1·3·5·7장에 해당하는 첫 번째 부분에서는 헬레니즘-로마 세계 및 유대교 문헌을 통해 당시 사회의 문화적 특성을 고찰한다. 이어 2·4·6·8장의 두 번째 부분에서는 이러한 문화적 가치가 신약 본문 속에서 구체적으로 어떻게 드러나는지를 분석한다. 본 연구는 성경 본문을 단지 신학적 논리로만 해석하는 것이 아니라, 고대 지중해 사회의 문화적 질서 속에서 신약을 청취하는 시각을 제시한다. 이를 통해 오늘날 독자는 신약 텍스트의 의미를 보다 충실하게 이해하며, 초기 기독교 공동체가 경험했던 실제적 세계와 신학적 긴장을 보다 생생하게 인식할 수 있다.
