This study examines Park Chan-wook’s film Decision to Leave as a text that intersects the issues of modern love, desire, and the ethics for the Other. It aims to analyze how the modes of subjectivity and ethical consciousness of the subjects in the film are formed and transformed. In particular, Jang Hae-jun and Song Seo-rae are respectively conceptualized as subjects who have internalized the reality principle and the pleasure principle. Through the contrast between these two figures, this study investigates how love is transformed from a mere emotional bond into a mode of subjectivation and an ethical practice oriented toward the Other. To this end, the study adopts Freud’s concepts of the reality principle and the pleasure principle, as well as Marcuse’s theory of desire, as its methodological framework, conducting a textual analysis of narrative structure, dialogue, visual signs, and symbolic systems. Within the film, Hae-jun is depicted as a subject of the reality principle who internalizes law, institutional order, and normative structures, perceiving the Other as an object of control and restraint. In contrast, Seo-rae, while forming her own ethical consciousness (self-norm) within the tension between Eros and Thanatos, is represented as a subject who practices an ethics of the Other by choosing to respond to the suffering of the Other rather than maintaining self-identity. More specifically, within the narrative, this subject exhibits a dynamic movement from an ontological subject who seeks to reduce the Other to her own normative framework to an ethical subject. Furthermore, the subject’s desire for the Other unfolds as “love,” metaphorically associated with “death,” leading to an ethical decision that carries the response to the Other to its extreme limit. From this perspective, this study interprets Seo-rae’s “disappearance” as a mode of subjectivation and as a form of relationality that enacts responsibility and response toward the Other. Accordingly, this study conceptualizes her choice as a “great refusal,” a “liberation of receptive sensibility,” and an “ethical decision.” In this regard, Decision to Leave presents a narrative model that dialectically synthesizes the tension between the pleasure principle and the reality principle by conceiving love as both a practice of the ethics of the Other and a mode of subjectivation. By analyzing the symbolic meanings embedded in the film’s narrative, its subjects, and motifs such as the “unsolved case,” “love,” and “death,” this study positions love as an ethical issue concerning the relationship with the Other. In doing so, it contributes analytically by illuminating the philosophical reflection of the director and writer on the conditions under which an ethical relation between the self and the Other can be established in contemporary society.

본 연구는 박찬욱 감독의 영화 <헤어질 결심>을 현대인의 사랑과 욕 망, 그리고 타자윤리의 문제를 교차시키는 텍스트로 규정하고, 작품 속 주 체의 존재 방식과 윤리의식이 어떠한 과정을 통해 형성되고 변형되는가 를 분석하는 데 목적을 둔다. 특히 장해준과 송서래를 각각 현실원칙과 쾌락원칙을 내면화한 주체로 설정하고, 두 인물의 대비를 통해 사랑이 단 순한 감정적 유대가 아니라 주체화의 형식이자 타자윤리의 실천으로 전 환되는 과정을 규명하고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 프로이트의 현실원 칙·쾌락원칙 개념과 마르쿠제의 욕망 이론을 방법론으로 채택하여 서사 구조, 대사, 시각적 기호, 그리고 상징체계에 대한 텍스트 분석을 진행하 였다. 영화 안에서 해준은 법과 제도, 규범적 질서를 내면화한 현실원칙의 주 체로서 타자를 통제와 절제의 대상으로 인식한다. 반면, 서래는 에로스와 타나토스의 긴장 속에서 고유한 윤리원칙(자기 규범)을 형성했지만, 이후 자기동일성의 유지보다는 타자의 고통에 응답하기를 선택한다. 구체적으 로 서사 안에서 해당 주체는 타자를 자기 규범에 환원하려는 존재론적 주 체에서 타자에 대한 책임과 응답을 수행하는 윤리적 주체로 이행하는 역동적인 과정을 보여준다. 나아가 타자에 대한 주체의 열망은 ‘죽음’으로 환유되는 ‘사랑’을 통해 타자에 대한 응답을 극단적인 수준까지 수행하려는 ‘윤리적 결단’으로 이 어진다. 해당 관점에서 본 연구는 서래의 ‘실종’을 주체의 주체화 방식이 자 타자에 대한 책임과 응답의 윤리를 수행하는 관계 맺기로 해석하며, 이러한 주체의 선택을 ‘위대한 거절,’ ‘수용적 감수성의 해방,’ 그리고 ‘윤리 적 결단’으로 의미화한다. 이처럼 <헤어질 결심>은 사랑을 타자윤리의 실천이자 주체화의 형식 으로 사유함으로써 서사 전반에 걸쳐 이루어진 쾌락원칙과 현실원칙의 긴장을 윤리적 차원에서 재구성하는 서사적 모델을 제시한다. 이에 본 연 구는 영화의 서사와 서사적 주체, 그리고 ‘미해결 사건,’ ‘사랑,’ ‘죽음’ 등 영화에서 반복적으로 호출되는 기호에 내재된 상징적 의미를 분석함으로 써 사랑을 윤리와 타자 관계의 문제로 위치시키고, 현대사회에서 자아와 타자 사이에 윤리적 관계가 성립될 수 있는 조건에 대한 감독과 작가의 철학적 성찰을 조명했다는 점에서 분석적 의의를 지닌다.
