This study examines Pungun-a Hong Gildong, a comic by Shin Dong-u serialized in The Chosun Ilbo for Children from 1965 to 1968, to analyze how the classical novel Hong Gildongjeon was reconstructed as comics content for child readers. It focuses on the transformation of characterization, narrative structure, and the ending, and considers the significance and effects of these changes. While Pungun-a Hong Gildong retains the basic framework of Hong Gildongjeon— Hong Gildong’s status as an illegitimate son, his activities as a righteous outlaw, and his departure overseas—it reduces and modifies the narrative of discrimination between legitimate and illegitimate offspring. Through this change, Gildong is reconfigured as a developmental hero who grows through learning and training. In addition, the work greatly expands the scope of Gildong’s activities. Whereas the original text mainly portrays the punishment of corrupt local officials, this comic introduces conflicts with treacherous courtiers who abuse political power as well as with foreign enemies represented by the Jurchens and pirates. The ending is also transformed: despite receiving recognition for his achievements and being offered an official position, Gildong refuses the appointment, recommends new figures to serve in the royal court, and departs for Yuldo Island. These narrative changes function as devices that enhance children’s emotional identification with the protagonist and increase narrative plausibility, thereby encouraging deeper immersion. At the same time, the depiction of foreign enemies reflects the anti-communist and anti-foreign sentiments present in children’s media of the 1960s. Ultimately, the work reconstructs Hong Gildongjeon as a developmental hero narrative while presenting Gildong as an ethical hero who punishes the abuse of power yet refrains from seeking power himself.

이 글은 1965년부터 1968년까지 『소년조선일보』에 연재된 신동우 화백 의 만화 ｢풍운아 홍길동｣을 대상으로, 고전소설 ｢홍길동전｣이 어린이 만 화 콘텐츠로 재구성되는 과정에서 나타난 인물 설정, 사건 구성, 결말의 변형을 구체적으로 살펴보고, 그 의미와 효과를 살펴본 것이다. ｢풍운아 홍길동｣은 ｢홍길동전｣의 서자 신분, 의적 활동, 해외로의 이동이라는 기본 얼개를 유지하면서도, 적서차별 서사를 축소 및 변형해 길동을 배움을 통해 성장하는 성장형 영웅으로 형상화했다. 또 탐관오리 응징을 주로 다 루었던 의적 활동을 권력을 남용하는 간신 및 여진족과 해적으로 대표되는 외적과의 대결로 대폭 확장했다. 아울러 길동이 공적을 인정받아 제수 받은 벼슬을 거부한 채 새로운 인물을 조정에 추천하고 율도섬으로 떠나는 결말로 바꾸어 놓았다. 이러한 변형은 이 작품의 주 독자였던 어린이 독자들이 보다 감정이입을 하고 개연성을 높여 서사적 몰입을 할 수 있는 장치로 기능하게 했다. 동시에 외세를 길동의 적으로 설정한 것은 1960년대 어린이 매체에 투영된 반공 및 반외세 정서를 반영한 것으로 볼 수 있 다. 아울러 권력을 남용하는 이를 척결하면서도 권력을 욕망하지 않는 것 으로 길동을 제시한 것은 길동을 윤리적 영웅으로 형상화한 것이라 할 수 있다. 즉 ｢풍운아 홍길동｣은 1960년대의 어린이 연재 만화라는 특성 속에 ｢홍길동전｣을 성장형 영웅담으로 재구성하면서, 권력 남용에 대한 비판을 드러내면서 권력 욕망을 절제하는 윤리적 영웅을 보여준 작품이라 할 수 있다.
