The Asian-African Writers’ Association was an organization within the Third World writers’ movement dedicated to opposing imperialist ideology and striving for the independence of Asian and African nations as well as the establishment of popular culture. Founded in the late 1950s and dissolved in the early 1990s, it brought together hundreds of writers from some 60 countries over a period of approximately 30 years, thereby realizing international solidarity in anti-imperialist literature on an unprecedented scale. This paper examines the development of the Asian-African writers’ movement, focusing on several key factors: the influence of the Soviet Union, which participated in the congresses based in Central Asia; the active role of Japan, a former colonial power, in the contemporary anti-imperialist writers’ movement; China’s involvement and subsequent withdrawal as it sought to spread Chinese-style socialism while opposing the Soviet Union; and South Korea’s marginalization and its underlying context. Furthermore, this paper analyzes the paradoxical meaning of the discourse of “political excess”—a term that repeatedly emerges in the process of historicizing the Asian-African writers’ movement—by examining the situation of the mid-1960s, when efforts to seek a new internationalism by distancing oneself from the two major blocs were caught up in the Sino-Soviet split under the influence of both the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as the Tokyo Conference, which, although criticized as being overly political for a writers’ gathering, in fact suppressed what was “truly political.” Finally, this paper examines the significance of poet Kim Ji-ha’s receipt of the Lotus Prize from the perspectives of anti-productivism and ecological humanity and the language of life, and explores the direction of the writers’ movement.

아시아・아프리카작가회의는 제국주의 이데올로기에 맞서 아시아, 아프리카 민족의 독립과 민중문화 구축을 위해 투신한 제3세계 작가운동 조직이다. 1950 년대 말에 창설되어, 30여 년간 약 60개국 수백 명의 작가가 참여하면서 압도 적인 규모의 반제국주의 문학의 국제 연대를 실현하였다. 이 글에서는 아시아・ 아프리카 작가운동의 전개 과정을 중국, 소련, 일본의 역학과 활약을 중심으로 정리하였다. 소비에트 연방에 소속된 중앙아시아를 근거로 작가회의에 참여한 소련의 영향력, 소련과 대립하며 중국식 사회주의의 확산에 부심했던 중국의 활동과 이탈, 식민지 가해국이었던 과거를 뒤로 하고 반제국주의 운동에 참여한 일본의 활약 그리고 한국의 소외와 그 배경을 살펴보았다. 이를 바탕으로 아시 아・아프리카 작가운동을 역사화하는 과정에서 반복해서 등장하는 ‘정치 과잉’ 이라는 언설의 역설적인 의미를 고찰하였다. 양대 진영으로부터 거리를 두고 새 로운 국제주의를 모색하였으나 미국과 소련의 그늘 아래에서 중국과 소련의 대 립에 휘말린 60년대 중반 아시아・아프리카작가회의의 상황 그리고 작가들의 회합이라고 하기에는 지나치게 정치적이라고 비판받았으나 정작 ‘진정으로 정 치적인 것’은 봉인해버린 아시아・아프리카작가회의 도쿄대회를 바탕으로 정치 과잉의 역설을 분석하였다. 마지막으로 김지하 시인의 로터스상 수상의 의미를 반생산주의와 생명의 문화라는 측면에서 살펴보고 작가운동의 방향성을 모색해 보았다.
