The tent theaters that emerged along the beaches of Gangneung during the 1970s and 1980s marked a pivotal moment in the decentralization and deinstitutionalization of Korean theater. Led by the theater company Gagyo, this experimental movement introduced a new paradigm in which performances moved beyond fixed indoor venues to meet audiences where they were. The circular tent theater expanded the spatiality of performance by harmonizing with natural surroundings, while also enhancing the accessibility and popular appeal of theater by drawing in diverse audience groups. Key works such as The Fantasticks and The Five embodied both artistic and social dimensions despite spatial limitations. In particular, the 1975 benefit performance supporting Pung-ho School exemplified theater's capacity for social responsibility. As the central hub of this experiment, Gangneung's tent theaters are now regarded as prototypes for modern outdoor stages and regional theater festivals.
