Saimyeongdasa was a figure possessing a complex identity as a commander of monk soldiers, a diplomat, and a spiritual practitioner. Since the modern Enlightenment period, his life has been established as a narrative where religious conviction intersects with national duty. These deeds represent a prime example combining Buddhist compassion and practice with national devotion, and continue to be reinterpreted in diverse ways across various art genres to this day. Therefore, it is essential to examine the current state of creative production of the Samyeongdang narrative across various genres and media since liberation, as well as the era's demands and modes of appropriating memory that shaped both its creation and reception. Since liberation, the Samyeongdang narrative has been created in nearly 20 works across diverse genres including novels, plays, theater, recorded changgeuk (traditional Korean musical theater), films, musicals, and docudramas. Thematically, while inheriting some dominant tendencies of heroic narratives, these adaptations avoided mechanical reproduction to secure mass appeal. They instead complexly combined popular sensibilities, sentimentalism, enlightenment, and historical depth. First, the most prominent genre within the tradition of creating and enjoying Samyeongdang narratives since liberation has undoubtedly been the realm of popular fiction. Saimdang narratives inherited the tradition of old chapbook novels, characterized by their popular appeal and folkloric quality, while simultaneously focusing on faithfully depicting Saimdang's patriotic spirit, love for the people, and inner struggles based on historical facts. Reproduced in the realms of theater, film, and recorded changgeuk (traditional Korean musical drama), this contributed to a renewed spotlight on Saimdang's stature. Second, the most notable recent trend is undoubtedly the original musical. Musicals aim to redefine Buddhism's social role through Samyeongdang's spirit of patriotic Buddhism, to imbue historical facts with artistic form through the artistic rendering of records, and to maximize audience empathy by fostering a communal memory. Despite its intentions to performatively recreate Buddhist cultural heritage and excavate and promote regional values, this genre revealed certain limitations: the mismatch between narrative space and performance space, the fragmentary nature of its directorial structure, and a lack of dramatic completeness.

사명대사는 승병의 지휘관이자 외교가, 수행자로서 복합적 정체성을 지닌 인물이다. 근대계몽기 이후 그의 삶과 활동은 종교적 신념과 국가적 책무가 교차하는 서사로 자리 잡았다. 이러한 행적은 불교의 자비와 실천, 그리고 국가적 헌신을 결합한 대표적 사례로, 오늘날까지 여러 예술 장르에서 다양한 방식으로 재현되고 있다. 따라서 해방 이후 다양한 장르와 매체를 통해 생산된 사명당 서사의 창작 현황과 사명당 서사의 창작과 향유에 작동했던 시대적 요구와 기억의 전유 방식을 살피는 일은 필수적이다. 해방 이후 사명당 서사는 소설, 희곡, 연극, 음반 창극, 영화, 뮤지컬, 다큐드라마 들의 다양한 갈래에 걸쳐 20편 가까이 창작되었다. 영웅서사의 지배적인 경향성을 계승하면서도 대중성을 확보하기 위해 기계적인 재생산을 피하고 통속성과 신파성, 계몽성, 역사성을 복합적으로 결합했다. 첫째, 해방 이후 사명당 서사의 창작과 향유 전통에서 단연 두드러졌던 갈래는 대중소설 영역이다. 사명당 서사는 통속성과 설화성이 짙은 딱지본 옛소설의 전통을 계승하는 흐름 이 존재하는 동시에 역사적 사실을 바탕으로 사명당의 애국‧애민정신과 내적 고민을 충실 하게 그려내고 있었다. 이는 연극과 영화, 음반 창극의 영역으로 재생산되면서 사명당의 위상을 새롭게 조명하는 데 이바지하였다. 둘째, 최근 들어 가장 주목할 만한 갈래는 단연 창작 뮤지컬이다. 사명대사의 호국불교 정신을 통해 불교의 사회적 역할을 재정립하 고, 기록의 예술화를 통해 역사적 사실에 예술적 형상을 부여하는 동시에 기억의 공동체화 를 지향하며 관객의 공감대를 극대화하고자 했다. 불교문화유산의 공연예술적 재현, 지역 가치의 발굴과 선양이라는 의의를 지니고 있음에도 서사적 공간과 공연 공간의 불일치, 연출 구성의 단편성과 극적 완성도 부족이라는 점에서 일정한 한계를 노정하고 있었다.
